Flir Scout 320 oppinions?
Anyone had a play with or owned a Flir Scout 320?
Its supposed to be effective to 550m, I'm looking at something that will be effective at spotting pigs in shrubs or shrubby terrain out to 300m-350m.
That might be pushing it I know, but I've seen what an older Flir could do, and it could do that.
These newer ones are more handy and easier to use, so it might be time to finally invest in one.

I have bene wondering about these things. Often when sitting on the "pass" for moose in the fall, I imagine I hear movement but can't see a damn thing through the brush. I've wondered if one of these would help me determine if there was an animal there. Would not help me shoot, obviously, but could help locate and prepare a bit better.

They are great, and comming down in price so it becomes a choice between thernal abd NV and Thermal wins hands down.
Great for predator calling with lots if light ground cover.

Looking at the specs of the Flir I think you are paying for the name over features
By my reading the Pulsar has better resolution for less money

What it will come down to is what gives the best picture for what I need, has enough range for what I want and is a strong and reliable unit.
Good battery life is a bonus.

The Quantum is the old model, the Helion the latest. I have the Core myself which can be used handheld or as a clip-on. I’m pretty sure it’s smaller than a Flir.Gun Barrel Ecologist wrote:Looking at the specs of the Flir I think you are paying for the name over features

That Core looks pretty damn good actually, its more flexible then just monicle or scope on its own.

I have a Flir 640. Awesome unit. On a hill face at night just before dawn I've picked up deer at 1400 metres. When 1st light comes up you get the 15x56 Leica binos out and start glassing till you find them. You know that somthing is there but you still have to glass. Just another tool to help you know there is game around.....

Using your Blaser and Remington analogy, FLIR are the long standing US company producing items for the US military just like Remington (company started in 1978)Suther wrote:This is true but the flir is more solid and a lot smaller. Also there is a lot in a name that has been at the cutting edge for ever. Much like buying a blaser over s Remington.Gun Barrel Ecologist wrote:Looking at the specs of the Flir I think you are paying for the name over features

Pulsar are the new kid on the block (1994) and thanks to having a factory in Belarus are popular in Europe - hmm newcomer, popular in Europe, doesn’t sell itself on a reputation such as “we made the sniper rifle that Hathcock used”
When we compare the models at the same price point I’ll take the helion core option.
My linking to the older model should be a good reminder of the problem with this technology- it becomes obsolete quicker than you can wear it out

That is true but as is with gen2+ and newer light enhancement equipment, you’ll still be stuck with a very usable device.

Thats the trouble with the standard NV be it Gen 1,2,3 or better, its not as good as thermal.
Thermal is passive and can see through foliage and works in zero light.
Its the way of the future.
But thats the other problem, it keeps getting cheaper and better so deciding when to buy is hard as you never know when is the right time to buy.
Usually thats after the latest release hits the stores.

But there are only so many .22s in the safe to fit them to once you’ve bought the newer model, as electronics have no resale value
