What kind of scope rail?

Post by analog_peninsula »

I’d like to upgrade this scope if possible. Does anyone know what kind of scope rail this is and whether it’s practical to remove the claw mounts from the rail on this scope and transplant it to a newer glass?

I read your original question wrong.

These mounts are silver solderd on.

They can probably be removed by heating.

Modern scopes are almost entirely made of aluminium.

So I don't know how you are going to connect a modern optic to that mount.

Optics Trade will be still be the source of your answers. They represent the most scope mount manufactures.

If money is no object Custom Guns New England would also have the answer, albeit a bloody expensive one.

To be honest, I didn’t really expect there to be a convenient solution. The existing scope is a 3-10 with a very thick three post reticle. While quite old, it’s still clear and very usable at reasonable ranges, assuming it will zero without too much difficulty. I emailed optics trade, and we’ll see if they have any suggestions.

https://www.optics-trade.eu/us/mounts/d ... ounts.html These are not Claw mounts, but they are similar on Pain in the ass factor to Claw mounts.

These are actual claw mounts https://www.gunsamerica.com/UserImages/ ... 067824.jpg

It’s a Sauer 3000 in 7x65r/16ga. Supposedly made in 1961, with a couple wood scratches but otherwise seems to have seen very little use. The action is still stiff and I seriously doubt the rifle barrel has seen more than 100 rounds down the tube.

The optics trade people simply pointed me back to the Kaps scopes, so any decision would have to involve the gunsmith doing the work.

I've got a line on a smith who's supposed to be really exceptional. He's going to some work that's reasonably related, but probably simpler. We'll see how that goes, then make the call. The existing glass is actually quite usable, so there's no hurry.
