Reflex or red dot

Post by Oscar »

I have had my krieghoff drilling both at the range and in the field and have come to the conclusion in its current configuration it is just not working that well. The problem is the sights.

Without the scope, using it as a shotgun is ok but it has a very tall front sights so if I go to use the flip up rear sight to aim the rifle tube, I have to push my face excessively into the stock which creates a rather nasty kick to the cheek. With the scope on, the swaro 2.5-10x 56 lifts my head up of the stock just a fraction more than I would like but using it as a shotgun is just not practical. Ok, so it has QD mounts but in both configurations it just seems too much of a compromise....yeah I know, it's great to have such first world problems

So was thinking about a red dot or reflex sight. The aim point with a 2moa dot looks good, but the reflex ( was looking at a doctor model) with. 3.5 Moa, has a wider FOV for shot gunning purposes? The cals a 9.3x74r so 100- 120m would be where I would think most it's work is so 3.5 would work...any ideas? Oh the 2.5-10 will find its way onto a new .222 tube for the m03 so no loss there

Mmm this sounds very familiar Oscar. I had a similar problem with my Merkel double rifle drilling when it was mounted with a 6x42 Zeiss. I had an awful whack in the check because my face was positioned very poorly on the stock. Without the scope it is great but god it hurt with that mount and scope. What I did was take it to Rob Bloomfield and he customized the mount base so I could mount a 1-4x24 Zeiss Victory HT in the mounts placing both rings on the FRONT tube only. Zeiss have always made their 1-4 scopes with the front tube greater than 100 mm. They are the only manufacter that does this that I am aware of. I understand your problem may not be exactly the same but my point is I believe your problem is the mount and scope and can be fixed. Why not buy another mount from Recknagel or Krieghoff. I would suggest a rail mount as they are a lot more flexible in terms of scope position. I realise this may be an expensive solution, but it will be worth it. My 9.3 drilling is a dream to shoot now because my head position is perfect on the stock.

I have a similar problem with the Sauer. I suggest the aimpoint micro and if not get a holosun 2moa. You will find it much easier to aim and more importantly to sight in. Height should be okay for what you want.

I've said it before, I'd really like to know if this design is / was patented as it has huge advantages for owners of scoped doubles or drillings

On the topic of the firearm at hand, what about a Z6 1-6x?

That's pretty cool. A spring loaded button for shooting with the rifle. I like it. Z6 1-6 that I've used on LOW BBF is a quality bit of kit. The new Leica ER5 1-5x24 also looks pretty good.

Oscar, I'm half tempted to grab a 2MOA reflex sight. They are made in Japan but you can buy them from Egun.de.

Might be worth sending an email to JK Precision and asking if one of these and a Doctor III could be sourced for a reasonable price

Happy to be proved wrong but I dont believe Pigeon is a Recknagel agent, whilst JK Precision in the Blue Mountains are, and can properly install the mount for Oscar.

There is a smith in Sydney that has been trained by Merkel. I reckon he would be able to fit them.
Herrons would be able to give you his contact details.

And he trades as JK Precision out of the lower Blue Mountains ;)
