Pissed off at March scope

Post by KO301 »

So I bought a March 1-10 scope for my Browning A-Bolt 12ga and I just could not shoot any satisfactory groups off a sled. I tried 6 different types of ammo and shot over 140 rounds. In Japan, that ammo alone cost about 1k USD.

It will put up to 2 rounds stacking and the rest goes all over the place. I'm not shooting very fast and I always let my barrel cool between my groups (3~5 shots)

My friend was kind enough to let me use his old Swarovski 2.5~10x42(It was a first focal plane scope so I guess it's a little older)
BOOM I was able to shoot some very nice groups with it.

After so much effort, I can only assume I had a faulty scope if a simple swap of scope made such a HUGE improvement in accuracy.

I'm just pissed off at March now and they are going to get a not so friendly call on Monday...

The photo on top is shot with March 1-10
The photo on the bottom in shot with Swarovski 2.5-10

Ammo is Remington Copper Solid
Distance in 50m
Gun is Browning A-Bolt 12ga

It happens alright, even with Swarovski. I feel your pain.

For my education.

why is it that you are needing one-hole accuracy with a slug gun?

When you want a rifle but can only have a shotgun then you want as much accuracy as you can get.

Still I'd be happy with the big group at 50m, but I'm shooting an open sighted smooth bore.

Although I did find a 1-4× scope perfect for the shotgun, especially on moving game.

When your gun and ammo is capable of 1 hole group, why not?
If a simple change of scope allow you to increase your range by 50~100m, why not?
I can't own rifles in Japan yet. 9 more years to go...
Unless I get a 28ga R93 and never tell the police about the extra rifle barrels XD

I hunt on driven hunt so I don't need high power scope to be honest. 1-4 will work just fine and I mostly have my scope set on 2 power but once in a while I need to take longer shots.

Hunting season starts on Thursday (November 01) so I'm extra frustrated.

March glass is clear and nice and stuff but a scope that can't even hold zero is worthless.
I don't trust this company anymore and I don't want to spend more money testing groups with this scope even if it comes back fixed.

I guess I'll try to get a Swarovski Z6 1-6 or 1.7-10 next.

I found the shotgun very tough on scopes, more tough then even my 375H&H.
If I ever get a scope again to go on a shotgun then it will be an actual shotgun scope.

It;s always disappointing when a scope plays up. But it happens with all brands..it's just that it seems the more you pay for them the less it happens. I've only had 2 scopes play up one was a Leupold and I had a S&B let loose last week. manure happens. :!:

It is for that reason that I on my overseas hunts I either have iron sights fitted or carry a spare scope/aimpoint, and sometimes both.

I must say that the group on top looks like a screamer to me. Nice shooting. And, I guess the bottom group looks like it would have done the trick too.

Hope it's sorted quickly. And good hunting.

Cheers :handgestures-thumbup:

I just sent back a March 10-60x56mm High Master for a reticle change at March in Suwa Japan. The March USA people are very nice and helpful. Years ago back when Kelby's did their US operations I had to send my 8-80x directly to Japan. It was very hard to communicate with them (no English) but they did get it back to me, took about 6 weeks which was pretty long.

They honor their warranties, the challenge is to communicate smoothly.

What gets me is over $1000USD for 140 rounds, that would cost me under $250AUD here.
Can you reload?
I got some nice accuracy at 50m from a smooth bore so a rifled barrel should be much better, I'd actually love a fully rifled shotgun just to play with.

Top group is 3 Lyman slugs, bottom is 3 modified Lee slugs with the key drive removed at 59m for an imp/cup choke.
They cost me bugger all to make as these were converted factory trap loads.

I called March today and the customer service guy pretty much just called me a bad shot.

He said I'm not looking through the scope right.

Never touching a March in my life again. To hell with them.

I think when the same ammo, same gun and just different scopes makes such a difference in group sizes then that's pretty damn poor customer service.

I'm going to sell the scope for sure.
I'll let the buyer send the scope in since the scope comes with warranty anyways but I just don't want to deal with this company anymore.
I don't care if it comes back fixed. It's not good for my mental hygiene.

I don't trust the company anymore and I don't want to bet my life on a POS.

Should have just bought a Swarovski or Zeiss...

Cheaped out and got myself in this kind of situation. I'm not rich enough to buy cheap scopes. Now I have to go buy a Swarovski. Could have just bought a Swarovski in the first place.

Usually the way, I tend to sell rifles but keep the scopes.
I have one 2-7x36 Kahles that has been on about 7 different guns now, still works like the day I bought it.

Sorry to hear about the shite you have had to deal with regarding that scope. I've had a March for several years and fallen HARD on ice and snow several times with it. It has held its zero and just kept on performing. All scope brands sometimes go wrong. What shouldn't go wrong is customer service and it doesn't sound like you got any. March aren't cheap scopes, at least mine cost the equivalent of a Swaro or Zeiss, so they should do better. I like my scope but I imagine I'd be as annoyed as you. Hope the replacement gives you a bit more joy!
