help me choose a scope

Post by JD3006 »

so ive been busy getting prices for a scope and saddle system

looking for a scope that is for hunting/stalking. would like to be able to dail in the drop without removing a cap..

these are the models and prices ive been given after many phone calls and emails.

Leica Magnus 1.5-10x42 non Illuminated - BDC - $3200 (Ring)
Leica Amplus 2.5-15x56i - BDC - Illuminated - $2850 (Ring)
Leica Fortis 2-12x50i - BDC - Illuminated - $3650 (Ring)

Zeiss Conquest V4 3-12x56 - Capped - Illuminated - $2600 (Ring)
Blaser scope - cant remember details or exact price but it was $4500+ not inc mount so a no go.

Swarovski is a little out of the budget with turrets etc.

blaser rail prices ive been given

Shop (a)
Rail ( zeiss Leica etc) - $920
Ring Rail - $920 - rings $99 ( per ring) $1118

shop (b) winner for rail
Rail (zeiss Leica etc) - $595
Ring Rail + rings - $985

shop (c) winner for rings
Ring Rail - $549 - rings $89 ( per ring ) $735

what what would be the best scope for price and features ?

Im thinking possibly -

Leica Amplus 2.5-15x56i - BDC - Illuminated - $2850 (Ring) - i know its entry level Leica but has higher mag and larger obj for light.
or
Leica Magnus 1.8-x12x50 - BDC - $2995 (Ring)

happy to share the locations of these scopes and rails if anyone needs them.

Difficult to say without knowing hunting conditions, likely ranges etc - but I'd have thought the 1.8-12x would make a fine stalking scope for deer. I like illuminated reticles and I guess that one isn't but you have good light in Oz so should be fine. A used Z6i shouldn't cost more than that Leica? Not that there is a lot wrong with Leica 👍🏼

thanks, the hunting here is Tasmania is pretty standard stalking and then into Victoria on the Sambar its more gully to gully and thick bush so possibly the longer shots.
range wise im not going to be shooting at an unethical distance but the odd day on the range would be fun but im not expecting to shoot 1000 + anyway.

i have looked at second hand Swaros but would like to build an all new rifle.. plus i will have the warranty with a new scope.

so standard stalking up to 300-400 at a push. would like to be able to effectively dial in my bullet drop and keep cost lowish with best features.

I know glass ( have used Leica Cinema lenses in the film industry) so happy to go with that brand just need a little help on the scope feature side of things, first time hunting since 2016 was back in April this year so feel a little rusty on making a choice on something that would see me through the next few years.

I've used a 2.5-15x Z6i with a BT on my 308w for roe deer for several years. Longest shot was just shy of 300m and that was fairly comfortable. I'm no marksman. So the 1.8-12x ought to be fine if it has a BT or tac turrets. If you're in thick bush sometimes then as low as you can go makes sense to me. Others will know your conditions better than me 👍🏼

Pricing seems a little all over the shop on the Leica's, are they all in-stock and available, I have a fortis 6 and it's great glass the Magnus is meant to be better but I've never looked through one.

Yeah the lower mag options would definitely be a good choice for that..
