Pear Pie

Post by Grumulkin »

This has been a good summer for fruit. We had July apples which are now gone in the form of pies and dumplings. We had a bunch of peaches which I had fresh off the tree and in pies. Now pears are getting ready to harvest.

I have two pear trees. The pears look about the same on each tree but one ripens 2 or 3 weeks before the other one and that one, for the first time since I planted it several years ago is LOADED. So, with no more apples or peaches, I thought pear pie might be good. Understand, these pears are of the HARD variety; quite a bit harder than a ripe apple so they're mostly fit for cooking. I generally cook them in a pressure cooker and they turn out perfectly but, in the absence of apples, I thought pear pies might be good to try.

The experiment was a resounding success. The pies are VERY good but they have to be baked 20 to 25 minutes longer than an apple pie. They need less sugar but otherwise are seasoned the same as an apple pie.

So, how many have tried a pear pie?

Do you have a recipe? Often have pears poached in red wine but can't remember trying a pear pie. Same method as apple apart from longer cooking?

Yes, same as making an apple pie except for about 25 minutes longer baking. These are also not soft pears. They are quite hard when ripe; much harder than a ripe apple so they're not something you would bite into without cooking. If you took the soft variety of pears and baked them in a pie you would probably be left with just mush.

My nana used to make pies or rather tarts from pears, cherries and apples, also the odd rhubarb one too.
The cherries were cooking cherries, they were so bitter you couldn't chew and swallow one they made your mouth dry up that bad and the pears were cooking pears that were so tough and stringy you couldn't eat them raw either.
But stew them in syrup for a while and then bake them and you had something else all together.
I loved my nana's tarts she always made me one or two when I would visit as a kid.
I'm soft and I don't care.
