Sauer 3000 16ga slugs?

Post by analog_peninsula »

I just took the plunge on a 7x65r/16ga model manufactured in 1961. Has anyone tried the 2.5” or 2.75” Brenneke slugs, or perhaps the Federal slugs in a similar gun? I’d think the so called “magnum” 2.75 Brenneke slugs would be safe in something manufactured in 1961, but does anyone have contrary information? My lease has an abundance of wild hogs, so any sit for a turkey is likely to devolve in hog zappage.

No but they definitely work in 12ga, 16ga,shouldn't be a, problem.
The only problem that you might find is with regulation, but at close distance that won't be a problem.
61 should be plenty safe for slugs as long as the gun is in solid working condition.
I'd definitely take some to the range and see how they shoot out to 50 yards.

I ordered a couple of boxes of both slugs and buckshot. We’ll see what we see, but it’s not the end of the world if neither works out.

Only way to know for sure.

Do you know what the gun is choked?

It’s choked IC/IM, a very happy pairing. The obsolete scope seems to be the only real negative, but it’s supposed to be clear and functional.

It should definitely be fine for slugs in the I/C but while safe it might not be particularly accurate from the I/M.
But there's still only one way to know.

I don't usually shoot slugs out of anything tighter then modified, but that's an accuracy thing more then a safety thing as foster and brenneke slugs are usually safe from full chokes. But always check the box the slugs come in to be sure.

Correction maybe. The barrels are stamped half and full, not ic/im, so it will take a patterning board to determine the truth of things. The back trigger actuates the full choked barrel as you’d expect, so I’ll have to see whether slugs or buckshot are more accurate in that barrel. It probably doesn’t actually matter since the shotgun chambers will have birdshot in them if I’m sitting for a turkey, Anyway, I’ll test both barrels and we’ll see what we see.

If that's the case then maybe only use the slugs in the modified barrel.
It would be safe to use foster slugs in the full barrel but the accuracy IME would be problematic at best.

Good news and bad news at the range today. The shotgun barrels shoot perfectly to the aiming point being neither left nor right, neither high nor low. The chokes really do perform as marked. The rifle barrel was easily to zero, and the scope turned out to be very functional and easy to adjust. The modified barrel more or less sprays buckshot, but the full choke groups very nicely at 25 yards. As the full choke barrel is actuated by the rear trigger in rifle mode, there’s a very useful rifle/buckshot combination available. The slugs I ordered haven’t arrived yet, so that remains a question mark. The bad news is that the rear trigger fails to reset most of the time when the action is opened, the behavior being identical in both shotgun and rifle mode. I can manually push the rear trigger forward after each shot, so everything is still functional, but the malfunction is tedious. One really nice design feature of the piece is the per barrel cocking indicators which make it easy to confirm the rear trigger has correctly returned and the barrel will fire. Any suggestions on how the trigger reset might be fixed?

As improbable as it may sound, the near miraculous occurred. Not only did I find a capable smith, but he turned around the fix within ten days. I’m going out right now to buy a lottery ticket.

I ended up being less than impressed with the slugs. As I recall, the first barrel / half choke shoots reasonably close to point of aim, but the second barrel is perhaps four or five inches off. Not unusable with practice, but the rifle / buckshot combo seems a much happier pairing.

That's always the issue with guns not regulated for slugs unfortunately.
