K 95 Stutzen Calibre
Here's a bit of a discussion starter. After all it is Friday and we are all getting a little jaded at the end of the week
What do we think are suitable calibres in the 50cm Stutzen barrel ? Use is Australian deer hunting and maybe a slim possibility of stuff like pigs and goats.
With deference to Charles, I am not a fan of the 06 in such short barrels, and would probably pass on the 7x65 for similar reasons (noise and velocity loss).
The two that seem best suited to me are the 308 and the 8x57JRS - possibly 7x57R.
Thoughts ? Votes ? Hard data ?

Re: K 95 Stutzen Calibre
Im a bit of 308win fan but I would get a 7x57R in a break action just because I'm a believer in rimmed rounds in break actions even though rimless rounds work just as good these days even in cheaper guns.
I'm soft and I don't care.

I'd go 308 in a short barrel. Plenty of guys using 308 in 16" barrels in NZ. Load it up with a fast powder and a 130gr TTSX or similar. Maybe something heavier if after sambar.

I'll chime in more after I get a chance to play with my 30-06 stutzen barrel, but there's really not a wrong answer. Just get the one you like the best. They'll all kill those deer just the same.

8x57R if you wanted a rimmed round.
308 if you were not worried about a rim.
I personally would go the 8x57R and load heavy woodleighs.

What an interesting topic. I think the right answer of course is the 243 using 100gr sp.

I already voted by ordering a .308 Winchester Stutzen, you guys with the rims are stuck in the dark ages.

It's a shame they don't chamber the K95 Stutzen in 26 Nosler...

I think the 243 is perfectly adequate for critters up to the size of a large rabbit.secondtry wrote:mchughcb wrote:What an interesting topic. I think the right answer of course is the 243 using 100gr sp.

Nah, 8x57R, wouldn't bother with a 7x57R as the whole 7x57 thing is a triumph of nostalgia over performance

Re: K 95 Stutzen Calibre
But Bob, rimmed cartridges just look so RIGHT in K95s and BBFs Plus three less parts are required - plunger spring and retaining pin -if that matters, and I suspect that it doesn't.stokesrj wrote:I already voted by ordering a .308 Winchester Stutzen, you guys with the rims are stuck in the dark ages.
Very sensible comment, if somewhat heretical, with which I agree. I hope you have an unlisted phone number.Gun Barrel Ecologist wrote:Nah, 8x57R, wouldn't bother with a 7x57R as the whole 7x57 thing is a triumph of nostalgia over performance
No, it isn't. In a 50cm barrel that would start bushfires in the next state.9.3x64 wrote:It's a shame they don't chamber the K95 Stutzen in 26 Nosler...

Re: K 95 Stutzen Calibre
I definitely agree with the rimmed rounds looking right in a break action, its also easier to extract the cases or at least that's my experience between single shot 410's and a 300BLK single shot.
