BBF97 vs BD14 Thoughts and Reflections

Just checking my records I've shot 20 deer this year with the BD14. Some 17 sambar and 3 fallow, plus a fox with the shotgun barrel. Now that I've had a reasonable hunt this year that was slightly impinged by 6 months of lockdown I'd like to reflect on hunting a full year with the BBF97 where I shot about 4 deer and 20 foxes, plus a few ducks and rabbits.

I have started to warm to the BD14 even though I'm yet to shoot something with the 222. I think its a good comparison of the 7x57R/12G versus the 308Win and the 20G. The BD14 feels a bit more like a rifle whereas the BBF97 feels a bit more like a shotgun. Both handle and shoot superbly for a forest gun. The calibres, seem perfect for the compact take down guns. Not too much blast or recoil.

The BBF97 has far less moving parts and is very simple setup. The BD14 is more complicated by I enjoy the palm swell since I broke my wrist.

Well with only a few months left and locked up for 22 hours a day I will see if I can get the BBF97 and plug a few more sambar before the end of the year so I can reflect a bit more - if I only could pick one which would it be?

I have been using the 7x57R 7mm 175gr Interlocks and woodleigh PP for some time. However I do have a batch of 140gr Ballistic Tips which I have not shot with. The best accuracy has always been with the 175gr however maybe its time to revisit that after a decade and see what sort of velocities I can get out it and and whether it makes much of a difference compared to the 308 165gr BT.

At least you won’t have any worries about the magazine dropping out

I reckon I’m going to keep a lookout for a K95 myself. I have no use for one but I like the idea of having one

I wouldn't risk 140 7mm BTs on sambar. They are nowhere near as strong as the 165 308 BT. The 140 7s may work if you miss front leg bone, but why take the chance ?

There is something that makes a lot of sense about a K95...

I've only shot sambar, pigs and fallow with the 175gr interlocks in the 7mm. They penetrate well. Might not get a chance this year.
