Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
A fellow Bud came to the rescue with some ammo for me! Between work and Turkey season I am going to have to wait to get the BD14 out to shoot it. I have been playing with some of the various trajectory calculators and I think a 60 yard zero may be the sweet spot to zero the gun. The wild card is where the shotgun barrel will hit in relation. I plan to zero the 30-06 at sixty yards then shoot the shotgun with slugs starting at 20 yards and moving out in 10 yard increments to see where and if they hit close to each other.after I get the 30-06 and shotgun barrels figured out I think the 222 regulation will be easy. I just have to decide if I want it to crossfire and hit same spot at 60 yards or use the system outlined in the article I referenced above.
Look at all the nice ammo! Leather pouch was a nice add. Thanks Bud!You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
When i sighted my 308 barrel in at 100m with the pard digital scope the 222 was 10cm low. The pattern at 50m woth the TSS #9 was also about 50cm low. When i shot the fox at 62m i aimed half a meter over its head.
On the other hand the lower 1.5-6x42 has both rifle barrels shooting through the 10 ring at 200 yards.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
Turkey season is over so I finally had a chance to work on the BD14. I had been playing around with various trajectory calculators and I wanted to test with a 60 yard zero range because it looked like the sweet spot for my purposes. I did a quick zero with the 30-06 at 60 yards then I started to shoot one slug starting at 60 yards and moving closer 10 yards at a time. results:
60 yards -3.5"
50 yards -.5"
40 yards -1.5"
30 yards -1.0
20 yards -1.0
Windage was perfect with no slug more than half an inch off center. This is a much improved result especially when you consider the accuracy limitations of shotgun slugs. I would think that it should pattern #9 TSS turkey loads and #4 TSS coyote loads similar to the slugs, but I will test after I have the two rifle barrels regulated and zeroed at 60 yards. Only question yet to be answered is do I have both rifle barrels hit same point of impact at 60 yards or do I have them hit parallel to each other? If it is parallel should I have the 222 hit dead on with the 30-06 a little left so the sighting for the 222 is more precise? If I have them hit to same point at 60 yards how far left will the 222 be at 100 -200 yards? lots of questions yet to be answered.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
I've had trouble with slugs printing spot on and the shot patterns hitting 2ft to the left, other guns matched up perfectly.
Shotguns are like 22's, their barrels are a law unto themselves.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
The 222 barrel is offset to the right of the 30-06 barrel by X amount, so at whatever distance it is adjusted to intersect with the 30-06 on the horizontal plane, then it will be X to the left at twice the sight in distance. As an example lets say that X is .5" and sight in distance is 100 yards, then the .222 will be .5" left at 200 yards. For all practical applications the accuracy is insufficient to see this, so other than really small varmints you can ignore this horizontal diversion.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
Thanks Bob I was hoping that would be the case and once regulated at 60 yards I plan to shoot it at 100,150,and200 yards to test.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
Part of the confusion here is using the “60 yard zero”. Typically when zeroing a high power rifle the “zero” point is the second crossing of the line of sight by the trajectory. A 60 yard zero with a 30-06 yields about an actual 200 yard zero. So your 30-06 bullet is still rising at 60 yards, while your .222 bullet may be either flat or at it’s second cross over point. This is compounded by the different scope over center bore heights of the 3 barrels.
I recommend you zero the 30-06 at 100 yards and then make it hit slightly high if you require (simulated 150-200 yard zero). Now leave the scope alone. Then zero the .222 barrel (with the barrel screws) at 100 yards. The .222 shoots so flat, that a 100 yard zero will be fine for turkey head hits from 0-150 yards. Then test shot loads at desired distance to see offset and use kentucky windage for those if necessary. And the shot will not usually hit with slugs especially with the precision aiming of a scope. This is how I did my D99 Duo .308, .222, 20 gauge.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
This is how I have mine sighted in, 4cm high at 100m.
I don’t use solids in the 20gauge, just 4 & 6 shot, it seems to work well.
The BD14 is capable of great accuracy provided you don’t get the barrels hot. They are very thin and heat quickly, but they are not designed for long strings of shots.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
For my intended purposes after trying different zero distances and looking at ballistic charts I have settled on a 60 yard zero range. With the scope 2” above the bore this gives me the flattest trajectory from 25-300 yards with both rifle barrels. As for the shotgun with slugs at 60 yards I hit anywhere from dead on to 3.5” low but perfect left to right. The variance has to be from the accuracy of the slugs. Peak of the trajectory curve is at 125 yards with the 222 hitting +0.8” and the 30-06 +0.9” 200 yards 222 -1.5” and 30-06 -0.9” at this point I am going to try and shoot some coyotes, deer, fox and Turkey with it before I make any other adjustments. Here is my final target shot at 60 yards.

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
For slugs, your only option is trying various makes and types and picking those that hit closest to the mark, and remembering where impact is for when you really need to use a slug. For my older BD880, First sight in was 30-06 at 100m with scope. Second sight in was Hornet also at 100m using end of barrel screw adjustments. Third sight in was 50m with a variety of slugs. One key point is you cannot be in no hurry to sight in a Bockdrilling, let barrels cool way down. Looks like you are satisfied with a 60 yard sightin, albeit that's out of the ordinary. Anyway, enjoy your Bockdrilling, an absolute fantastic hunting tool for Ansitzjagd, I've had many a great memories!

Re: BD14 The Long Road Ahead
Thanks Dom, I know the 60 yard zero is not the conventional distance but after fiddling with this for a year I think it will suit my purposes best. I need to to shoot some game with it this fall and will report back.
