Dickinson Shotguns

Post by mchughcb »

On Friday I held a lovely Dickinson 20G Estate sxs. Anybody had anything to do with this brand, as their sidelocks look very nice?

Never heard of them. I will have to research them a bit.

Cabelas in Dundee Michigan had a couple (SxS "Plantation" model) along with some Webley and Scott which appear to possibly be the same Turkish manufacture masquerading under names that appear as "english best" to the uninformed.

The machining/fitting was surprisingly good, the bluing was very good, however the embellishments such as engraving and inlays are severely lacking, in fact it looks as if the guns we're handed over to an amateur home smith that used a pen engraver to inlay some fake gold to put his their name on it. They would have been much better off leaving such tacky touches off of the guns entirely.

But you get 90% of a $9000 SxS for around $2000... Personally I'd pass and get a used Merkel for the same or even less money.

This photo is a good representation, however the resolution is too low to show that the lettering isn't engraved or stamped, rather it is a series of circular impressions with fake gold imprinted such as what you get from a pen engraver going over gold foil.

Really distracts from the rest of the firearm...

They are famous for their round body side by sides. My wife was shopping in Ireland a few years back and wandered into their shop. She sent me a picture of her holding a wonderfully crafted, petite, round body side by side 20 gauge for a little over €100K. At one time I was into english side by side shotguns and had some really nice ones, my favorite was a 1936 built Gallyons and Sons 20 gauge side by side http://gallyon-and-sons.co.uk/heritage/
But back in 2001 when the fine English side by side craze was on, a fellow offered me enough money to go on an African Safari with a generous bag so I sold it.
In my opinion those side by sides are really great for shooting flushing birds over dogs that fly straight away and not much else. If there are crossing birds to be shot then my F3 is four times the gun for 10% of the money.

Now that you have read all this erase it from you memory, I was talking about Dickson not Dickinson. :shhh:

Well they were throwing out the last of the wembly and scott side by side 20g with 26" barrels for only $750US.
For the price the quality is not bad. Might put a pad on it. I'll see.

So when the permit is processed I'll pick it up. Either tomorrow or next week.

Good work Chuck.
I love proper frame size 20 gauge guns.
Particularly handy if you find some nice quail country.

I hope ducks this year after hog deer. Hopefully I'll get some video of it in action. Then maybe some quail.

I like the Webley & Scott shotguns, saw a nice 20ga version today that I would have loved to bring home, but the timing was off for me.

I had to grab that one quickly. My first preference was not a straight stock because of my wrist but it handled okay.

Now I have the classic 20 bore, I can play with the big boys and play the big boy games. Walking around the house with the 20 bore, dressing gown and loafers the wife commented that I need the English attire to go with it

Very nice gun, I do think the gold name looks a little forced, but the rest of the gun is just so beautiful.
