Choke slections?

Post by SPEEDY » Fri Mar 23, 2018 10:06 am

I'm thinking about buying a unique choke slection for the new coach gun.
What I'm thinking is buy 2 x IC, 2 x MOD and 2 x IMP FULL or Turkey.
That way I've got both barrels choked the same IC for buck and slugs for pigs and deer, MOD gir ducks and geese and IMP FULL or Turkey for whistling foxes.

Now admittedly I will probably leave it as it is IF it patterns good with buckshot and steel shot at 30m, but I will find out tomorrow I guess.

Now what would be your choice and why?
I'm not sure if the super tight chokes will be that good with BB's especially the heavy 36-42gm loads.
Regular full or maybe IMP MOD and FULL would be the safest best.

I think if you are really interested in choke constriction and best applications you need to look at what Müller has to say. He knows more about chokes than I do. https://mullerchokes.com/pages/home?gcl ... MYEALw_wcB

I definitely agree with him on several points especially about speed. I've patterned a number of guns in BB (my size of choice) and I used the expensive Supper X 36gm BB's under the assumption that the faster speed and premium price ment better performance.
What I found was clumps in the pattern, lots of them.
The budget then 36gm Bushman shells however produced perfect shaped patterns with even pellet distribution. So I tested a number of shells and found every time the slower budget shells always through more even patterns.
The only sort of exception was the mini magnums, they through 42gm slower but that in combination with extra pellets made amazingly dense even patterns.

I'm curious to see how fixed imp/cyl will pattern, but I have found them great for buckshot.
Also I'm curious to see how steel shot patterns too.

I’ve had really sporadic results using buckshot with open chokes, Cylinder, Imp Cyl, Light Mod. Some were ok but most were horrible with an occasional combination of load and choke that worked well. Mostly though i’ve Found tighter patterns with Mod and tighter.
