Pattern testing.

Post by SPEEDY »

I just went and tested the new shotty out at 35 yards as I figured this is close to maximum with the IMP/CYL from a coachgun.
I think the results are a little skewed as with the slip on recoil pad I think it was shooting high, but its a good non scientific field test.

I'm actually predicting that my #2 and BB steel shot will pattern much better. I'm also waiting on some Alpha max 36gm AAA and Rio minimag 42gm BB's although I'm leaning towards #2 shot now.
I'd also like to try some #2 36-40gm reloads in steel shot wads for an improved longer range pattern.
I will also keep my eye out for tubs of #3 heavy shot of I can find it, although finding a 50" Sambar stag walking down my street is more likely to happen 1st.

I don't know Speedy, that is pretty much what I meant when I said open chokes with buckshot produce iffy patterns. I don't see anything there that would come close to satisfying me, they all look like wounding patterns, unless the range is kept very short.

Th SSG is the only one I would use, it would be good out to 40 yards, the 00SG would be fine for jumping them at close range.
Thinking about having the forcing cones lengthened to reduce the flyers and recoil a bit.
Imp/cyl is only supposed to be good for 30 yards anyway, so I was 5 yards out of range apparently.

I'm thinking I skewed the results a little to much, imp/cyl is a 30 yard optimal choke and I was at 35 yards, I also think the gun shoots a little high so I will repeat the test at 25 yards and use a bigger piece of cardboard to test the full pattern.

It was the opinion of many gunwriters in the eastern US to promote the use of cylinder or improved cylinder chokes for buckshot. They wrote that tighter chokes actually opened up the pattern unlike bird shot which tightened with more choke constriction. I never found this to be particularly true. I've killed a lot of deer with improved cylinder and 00 buck at 25-30 yards with the deer driven in front of dogs. I've also wounded quite a few that the dogs caught and held until I could administer the coup de gras. With my modified choke 16 gauge and #1 buck I've killed them cleanly at 60 yards. At close range 10-20 yards buckshot is devastating, but not very impressive when range increases much.

What do you plan on shooting with the coach gun?

Flushing pigs in the thick stuff, some ducks down the track from the kayak and for whistling foxes.
Range wont be too far, although I'm also looking at buying a second one in mod and full for a proper matched pair for driven fox and crows over decoys.
They are actually supprisingly good guns for the money and I'm definitely not afraid to abuse them.

Winchester makes some loads that they glue the shot together to tighten patterns and extend range. Federal and Hornady use the true flute wad and again this is supposed to increase range and improve patterns. I have not had the best of luck with the Winchester loads but great luck with the Federal loads. I think they might work well for you in the more open chokes you are using.

Thought of that if I could find them.

But I should be able to get the forcing cones lengthened to reduce the flyers and I think that will give me all the improvement that I need.

I did another run today at 30m with Com 34gm BB (steel) Remington nitro steel 32gm #2, Eley VIP steel 32gm BB
and tried two buckshot loads out on bigger paper.

Then to top it off at 40m I ran some various .69 round ball loads in various trap loads and 2 in 32gm Winchester Bushman loads.
I'm damn happy with this for 40m standing with just a front bead.
It definitely means that the regulation is pretty close so my Lee slugs should shoot pretty damn good.

Tried it at 50m today with my modified Lee slugs, two things I found were that they shoot high and that its bloody hard to see 2" white square at 50m with uust a front bead to aim with.

The second thing is that there is no accuracy difference between my my modified slugs with silicone in the back or without it.
The other thing is that there is no damage to the wads from the silicone filld slugs, but the un filled slugs must get the wad pushed up the hollow back and a ring with the petals exits but doesn't go very far.
