Age is not an issue at all
I compete at an international level and I never for a moment think that's an handicap
Send me a PM and I will exchange details with you off line
Sporting clays you can call on my friend Ben Husthwaith who now lives in the us virtually full time and trap is easy because that's my game.
Have you tried Olympic trap ?
It's like play station 20
Totally addictive.
No other shooting game comes close

If London Hunter can get you some time with Ben Husthwaith you should take full advantage. Ben, is one of the all time best of the best of sporting clays. Any time with him would be very well spent, no matter what the cost. Find a way to make this happen. It would be like taking a golf lesson from Tiger Woods, tennis from Pete Sampras, rifle shooting from David Tubbs. Do this.

People have spent a lot of time, money and aggravation trying to figure out what has been said here... Great Stuff
boyscout wrote:London Hunter is spot on with his advice. I will add my personal experience in an effort to save you time and money. Even if your just trying to beat your buddies on the weekend these basics apply. Your probably looking for a sporting clays gun if you want to do several things with it, trap guns as mentioned are very specialized tools.
1. Dont trust some gun store yahoo to fit a shotgun to you. Only use a known expert fitter in your area. If you cant find one then travel to a place with known expert fitting services. This is very important, cant stress it enough. If you ask questions about pitch, cast off, or length of pull to a guy at Cabelas or Gander Mountain 99% of them wont have a clue. If you dont know how to mount a gun correctly it cant be fit correctly (this goes with number two).
2. Take several shooting lessons from a known expert in your area. Even if your a natural they can help so much with strategy that it is worth it. As mention breaking clays is very mental.
3. Dont buy cheap shells. Its worth the extra to buy Win. AA's or Rem. STS's, find them on sale and buy several cases.
4. You dont have to buy a double gun (i know i just lost several of you). The most successful sporting clays shooter in America shoots a Beretta semi-auto. He can shoot anything he wants, Beretta has begged him to shoot a double, he hasnt changed. Semis are cheaper and have less recoil. The Beretta semi is also very easy to fit to many shooters. I have several very nice double guns, but if there is money on the line i'm going out the door with the Beretta 391.
5. Get long barrels. Long barrels help in several areas, but basically with any gun the longer the sight radius the more accurate you will be. At least 30 inches on a semi or double.
This is just a start, this could go on forever. Hope it helps.

Dallas Gun Club is the only club near me that throws Olympic Trap. I would be keen on giving it a try. It is a members only club and I am not one, but have several friends that are. Maybe one day? How does Olympic Trap differ from American, and why did you choose that discipline?
Re: what shot gun for trap and maybe sporting clays?
Ok this is going to be a long one
American trap is thrown at shorter distances and narrower angles
Olympic trap has rules laid down by issf with 6 shooters and 15 machines and throws 75 +/- 01 metres
Both have rising targets
Both in Olympic one can only use 24 grams shells
I have compete in kerville against the us team a few years ago but I have never shot at Dallas
Last I heard that it is a little run down And not all machines are throwing regulation targets
Bottom line Olympic trap will get you to the Olympics but American trap is a causal game
Hope that helps
I understand there are also layouts at your national training camp in Benning Florida and San francisco and that's about it

Pretty neat I must say. I'd never have that kind of discipline! Good luck on your quest.Londonhunter wrote:Just read your post again

Re: what shot gun for trap and maybe sporting clays?
the bt 99 is a great gun for what it is. there are many guys telling you to get a coach. just remember if you are doing this for fun then you only need to learn the basic few things. i have never shot a shotgun before last year. dec was my first year anniversary is shooting trap and some sporting clays and skeet and 5 stand. the first thing i had to do was get my gun to fit me. everyone hold there gun different so you should go to a pattering board and see where you gun shoots. if your looking for a nice trap gun you have to keep in mind if you want to shoot doubles you need an over under or semi auto. i would say keep away from semi auto because of having to clean and worry bout jamming. i bought a used browning 625 sporting . the the forearm is different on this gun then on a trap gun because it is a sporting clays gun. well i use it for trap and all the games and it does fine. i think that it is more important to learn your gun and get used to it instead of changing this and buying that and adjusting everything. i always shoot the same ammo. my first year i shot a 99 at the pa state shoot, i took first place in Wisconsin in to of there events at there state shoot , and finished in the money a half of dozen times. and i have instructors tell me i am doing everything wrong. stick with browning, Beretta, kolar, the better names. if you wallet is deep i would go with a kreigoff k-80 and never look back. if your around pa let me know and i would be glad to take you out and show you about hold points and show you the basics.

Re: what shot gun for trap and maybe sporting clays?
well i bought a browning 625 sporting and bought a browning 425 sporting for back up. it has been 14 months since i started shooting the clay games. i found out very quick that trap was were my interest was. i still shoot skeet, woble, 5 stand, sporting, but trap is what i like. i shoot a 99 in the pa state shoot this year. that was my best ata score. i also shoot in the wisconsin state shoot and on day two i won first place in c class singles, and first place in d class doubles. i was excited. i still have not broke 100 strait. my ata average is 93 singles. i shoot pratice on thursday and average 95, 96,. my mind is the hardest thing to control. i am shooting winchester aa super handicap 7.5 shoot 1-1/8 . that seems to be my favorite round. i started using a full choke and my score went up and i got better breaks. thats your up date london hunter, thanks for askingLondonhunter wrote:Just curious how are you getting along with your clay pursuit ?

Sounds like you've figured some things out pretty well. Considering your time in the sport you're doing good in the competition end of things. I shot for a few years and wouldn't have even entered a competition... As Clint said, 'a man's got to know his limitations'.

Re: what shot gun for trap and maybe sporting clays?
This December marks my two year date of shooting clay sports. I am spending most of my time shooting trap. May be because there are more places to shoot trap then sporting clays, I'm not sure but trap is my favorite. Last year at the pa state I shoot a 99 and this year at the pa state shoot I shoot a 99 and backed it up with a 98. I won first place in my class and revived a very nice leather bag with my name on it and got my pic in the trap magazine. I am still using my browning 625. I think that my mind is my worst enemie at the clay games. I have been praticing a diferant kind of shooting. I call it speed trap. I shoot alone and I average a little under two minutes shooting 25 birds loading one shell at a time and putting spent shells in my bag. If I let shells hit the ground I can save about 15 seconds. I find it very fun and I average 24. No one else shoots this way that I've seen. Maybe cause they think it ain't safe but I really enjoy it

Re: what shot gun for trap and maybe sporting clays?
This is a funny thread...someone posts very 6 months or so, it seems (started in 2011, it will shortly be 2014!)
I've lately taken an interest in shotguns again. I bought an old Charles Osborne British Gamegun...30" barrels, IC and Full, with 2 1/2" 12ga chambers...very genteel. I then got an Ugartechea 20ga SxS with 30" barrels choked IC-Mod. Those will be my field guns on the preserve property behind me, where we stock Pheasants. Today I picked up a Beretta 682 12ga O/U, and plan on shooting at a trap club a few miles away to keep in shooting-shape.
