Another QL query

Postby Gun Barrel Ecologist » Mon May 15, 2017 4:58 am

Does the current edition of Quickload include Woodleigh Hydros in the bullet database?

If so, what length does it give for the 400g .422" hydro and is stuffing 84g of ADI AR2209 in Norma Factory Brass safe with this bullet at an OAL of 89mm?

My QL does not have the 400gr .422 HSB listed. I took your info and put it in QL with the 400gr FMJ and altered the bullet length to 1.642" per the Woodleigh Loading Manual. The results are: 116.6% fill 2416fps (22" barrel), and a whopping 64469 psi.

O...K....

remind me what max pressure this case was designed for? :o

I've got the capped hydros and to crimp between the front two bore riding rings it looks like OAL has to be up at 94mm :o

Now the Mo3 mag box might be long but I doubt it's that long  so a couple might have to be decapped.

I'll go and (re)measure the bullets shortly but I'd be keen to hear what the pressure is if the load is dropped back to 82g with all else the same

QL lists the max pressure for the 404J at 52939psi

COAL@ 94mm - 84.0gr - 107.1%fill - 51519psi - 2306fps

COAL@94mm - 82.0gr - 104.6% fill - 47517psi - 2246fps

COAL@ 89mm - 82.0gr - 113.9% fill - 58784psi - 2350fps

Some measurements as promised:

Max case length listed in Woodleigh manual 2.875" - 73 mm, case trim length 2.865" - 72.8 mm

Length of Hydro in manual 1.565" Length of capped hydro in my hands 1.596" - 40.6 mm (in 2017 catalog listed as 1.467 :? )

Length from cap to behind most forward driving band 20.5mm

So shortest crimped OAL with capped Hydro is ~ 72.8 + 20.5 = 93.3 mm

I'm seriously hoping the M03 has a 95mm mag

:handgestures-thumbup: Thanks mate

Should we split the difference and try 83g? ;)

:handgestures-thumbup: Thanks

Although n=3 it the increase in velocity between 82 & 83 exceeds that of 83 to 84, indicating (in my mind) a tipping point where (velocity) returns start diminishing around 83.5

Ok,

Here's pushing the friendship:

400g .458" 35.3mm Capped Hydro (22mm bearing surface) in a .45 Blaser case with 55g of AR2207 and a 72mm OAL

I have a suspicion that Woodleigh changed the metallurgy of their Hydro's as the original lengths quoted don't line up with what I've got in my hands, making it extremely hard (& dangerous) to rely on 5 year old handloading data. At their price point you don't really want to fire off 50 just to find a load that your rifle likes :(

Have you considered calling them? US bullet manufacturers are really helpful in this area and usually have staff that knows much more than is published.

Already had a good chat with Geoff over the phone - 84g in the .404 is his recommended max - I forgot to ask about OAL

As for the .45 Blaser, other than selling his 350g RNs to Romey he has had little experience with the case :D
