Re: Too many calibers
You guys must have more automated set ups than me - the actual mechanics of reloading are fine but case prep drives me nuts. Loading for all of 8 cartridges it can take me years to get inspired to sit down and restock supplies for some rifles.
If you know of a low mileage R93 barrel for sale and an exporterRoe Deer wrote:Shame you. No 8,5x63..

Yes, case prep is also the single thing I look least forward to. Very labor intensive and time consuming.

Re: Too many calibers
I think most of us hate case prep. I've even been known to use forced Labor, the Florida Jr. High Power Rifle team. But then I do provide them good tools, I have a Giraud case trimmer that makes short work of the trim, chamfer and bevel operation. And I use universal decap dies and then the stainless steel tumbler case cleaning in large batch operations. It makes it go so much smoother.
For the actual loading I use my Dillon 550B for anything over a hundred rounds and I throw powder charges instead of weigh in the vast majority of cases. I've proven to myself that my thrown charges hold as good or in some cases better vertical dispersion at 600 yards than my carefully weighed charges.
In general we tend to spend too much time on things that simply don't matter, and too little time getting the important things right, like the recipe.
Neck turning and the like is absolutely a waste of time unless your are trying to reduce a bench rest group from .19" to .17".

Re: Too many calibers
Case prep sucks. I remember the good old days when was young and all I had was a 22 hornet. I didn't even know of the concept of case prep when I reloaded. Probably explains why I couldn't hit the side of a barn with at a 100 yards too

Re: Too many calibers
I was lucky, at 15 I was given a Lee Loader AND an RCBS chamfer tool
A few years past before anyone told me you have to trim cases to a specific length

Re: Too many calibers
Sounds fmiliar - did you also have the die set where the main reloading tool was a hammer?mchughcb wrote:Case prep sucks. I remember the good old days when was young and all I had was a 22 hornet. Yep, that be the Lee Loader
You have to supply your own hammer

I used one of them in 12ga, I'm surprised their weren't more accidents with them.

Re: Too many calibers
Wow, and I thot I was the only one who didn't like case prep! Now the truth comes out, ha.
There are those who reload only so they can shoot, and then there are those who only shoot so they can reload.
I belong to the first group and proud of it!!

Re: Too many calibers
Yep, I just finished loading up 223rem to find a long range load, 1st reloading I have done in years.
I don't enjoy it exactly but there is something relaxing about reloading.
Must be catching as now I'm looking at developing a new load for the 9.3x62

Re: Too many calibers
This is also what I started with but for a 16 gauge. It took me a while to figure out that the pretty crimps were dependent upon how the components stacked in the case, not how big a hammer you used.Gun Barrel Ecologist wrote:Yep, that be the Lee Loader

I started with one for a .38/.357. I thought I was in tall cotton.
