Quickoad ? 8x57 - Powder choice for 220 gn RN Woodleigh
I am just a little bit undecided on this one, and would prefer not to waste range time and components on a bad choice.
I will use either H4350/AR2209 or Varget/AR2208, but cannot nut out which is likely to give me the best velocity. My feeling is that 220gn is right where the slower H4350/2209 might be starting to kick in, but that is only my feeling. I'm also pretty sure that a max load of 2209 will require a fair bit of compresson, but again, that is only my feeling.
Rifle is a K95, so I'm not fussed about loading it up to bolt action pressures.
If a kind soul would please run it through quickload for me, I would appreciate the help.
Details are: RWS brass, Federal 210GM primers, Woodleigh 220gn .323 R/N, LOA 3.150" .The LOA is an estimate based on my fiddling around with two different 200s in the same rifle. My guesstimate of land clearance at that LOA is .030"/.040".

I can do it for you after dinner tonight....your K95 can handle Weatherby cartridges so full power 8x57 loads won't stress it in any way.

Thanks Dinger
I realised after my initial post that I had forgotten to mention barrel length of 52cm.
I'm inclined to think that even in the 52cm bbl, 2209 will still have the speed advantage, but those figures suggest to me that 2208 may provide a sweeter load in terms of accuracy and muzzle blast.
Hmmm - I think I may work up a load with 2209 and see how it goes. If it is necessary to try 2208, there wont be much work up needed once I know how 2209 goes. Probably going to have to buy some more 220s though
Thanks again.

We could have run a sweep. Q/L does seem to confirm my feeling that it is line ball, but with a bit more velocity from 2209, so you probably didn't lose your moneymchughcb wrote:My money would be on the 2209

That 2209 is a compressed charge and comes with added warnings for the QL guys. Backing it off would see parity in velocity.

OK - thanks for that. Might go with 2208 then. If I could make 2400 with the 220 out the 52cm bbl, that would be fine for my purposes, and it looks from a Q/L point of view that I should be able to get there with 2208.Dinger wrote:That 2209 is a compressed charge and comes with added warnings for the QL guys. Re: Quickoad ? 8x57 - Powder choice for 220 gn RN Woodleigh
I wouldn`t trust quick load too much... It seems to be wrong most of the times.. Even if you have fed it the most accurate data...
A load which QL said wouldn`t be 100% case full( 95 % full at best) ,ended up being a compressed load even though I fed ql with the exact volume of the same case I was trying to load....Even though the bullet wasn`t seated too deeply,it crunched the powder a lot...
For some 308 loads with RS52 powder the pressure and velocity it predicted were waaaay off..Actual results were 40m/s more than ql predicted and the load came up on the hot side(slight pressure signs)...
I have it installed on my PC ,but i just don`t trust it...
I think that both the powders you selected would do the trick, personally I'll give it a couple of tries with the powder I already have at hand.If results don`t appeal to me,I'll start looking at the reloading manual of the bullet manufacturer for what they propose.
I'm waiting for dies I ordered for the 8x57is and I intend to load some of the lighter projectile choices(11.7,12 gram) on top of some reload swiss RS50 powder (I decided to use that powder for my 9,3x62(720 m/s with a 18.5 pill out of a standard blaser barrel with no pressure signs and recoil that is very manageable..) and my 308 win,it`s also suitable for the 8x57).
Best regards,

Are you loading for the 8x57IS or the IRS? I think the IRS has slightly more case volume so the 2209 might just be the ticket. I don't know if Hodgdon's CFE223 is available to you but it works well for me pushing a 220gr Sierra Game King out of my R8.

I've also learned to step carefully around the ReloadSwiss powders and Quickload. The powders seem to be good, the QL output, not so good. I've never had problems with Norma, Vit or Hodgdon powders and QL. FWIW.....JPBlaser wrote: For some 308 loads with RS52 powder the pressure and velocity it predicted were waaaay off..Actual results were 40m/s more than ql predicted and the load came up on the hot side(slight pressure signs)...

OK - loaded some new unfired Norma cases with 2208 and some with 2209. For the K95, I was able to load them out to around 3.195 OAL which gave around .030" to .035 land clearance. Using a 100mm drop tube and trickling the 2209 (up to 56g) meant that compression was no more than .040" to .060" in the neck - no crunching noises or change in feel on the press handle.
Now if the weather would improve, and the new sky screens for the Chrony would get here, I could do some testing.
And no - I didn't shoot the screens Must be one of the few chronos that has actually survived to be old enough for the screens to age harden and crack.

Then, clearly, you weren't using it right....secondtry wrote:And no - I didn't shoot the screens Must be one of the few chronos that has actually survived to be old enough for the screens to age harden and crack.

Hi secondtry, sorry to dig up an old thread.
I am soon to work up some loads with a 8x57 and 200 grain Speer hotcors, and was wondering whether to try 2208 or 2209?
Just wondering if you have any update on your testing with both powders?
My rifle is a new Zastava with 24 inch barrel.
Thanks mate
Allan
