22 Hornet Crushed Cases when Full Length Sizing

Post by 9.3x64 »

I am trying to get some 22 Hornet loads ready foy my BD14.
Problem is I am new to loading the 22 Hornet and the first 2 cases I tried FL size are crushed.
RCBS Competition dies.
RWS brass.
I screwed the die down until it touched the shell holder when the ram was in its upper most position.
Then lowered the ram and turned a 1/4 turn further downwards, just like the RCBS instructions said.

Both cases are severely crushed.
What do the Hornets experts advise?

Thankyou in advance Allan.

My general advice is to back off a lot more, then tighten it until it is sizing correctly. You should sèe a little sizing down the neck more and mire until its just right.
Others might have more useful and accurate advice to offer, but this is my usual method.

Thanks mate.
I suspect I might be oversizing.

You should have seen the 1st few 6mmBR cases I tried to load.
That was buy using the recommended manufacturer's setting, by doing that I got it perfect.

i don’tknowwhat Is going on as I haven’t run into that issue and I’m using RCBS dies also. I do start out with the die backed out and then adjust it to move the shoulder back only .003”.
The RWS brass is much thicker than the Winchester brass I use. So much thicker is it that the 13 grains of LilGun that gets me to an accuracy node in my K95 will not even fit into an RWS case. So they are a no go for my rifle.
I was just shooting mine today with the following load.
Sierra 45 grain .224 Hornet Soft Point
13.0 grains LilGun
Winchester case
Federal Small Pistol Primer (key to best accuracy)
COL 1.690”

No it didn't.
I did notice the "crush" started way before the ram got anywher near the top.
Feels like it catching on something, like the recapping rod or something?

Ok, I have just pulled out the below piece in the photo below. I wound the die down 1/4 of a turn below the very top position of the shell holder when the ram is at it highest point.
It felt good.

Do you reckon I should leave it as is?
I can decap with my redding decapping die.
I notice the above removed part does not fit inside the case mouth of my cases, is that normal?

You still need the expander to expand the case neck on the upstroke. My feeling is your expander ball was inside the neck of the brass at the same time as the case neck was being clamped down by the neck sizing part of the die. The expander ball may need to sit lower. Try some dry lube inside the case neck also....

Cool as.....being a short case I thought the expander ball height adjustment would be crucial. I'm glad I could help.

Didn't even think of that, I've definitely never had that problem before.
