Heavy pills in the 308win?
Anyone tried heavy 220-240gn pills in the 308win with the 1:11 twist of a blaser?
I'm feeling like trying a classic style old time African load with a similar trajectory to the 9.3 and I'm hoping similar effect on game.
Its kind of an in your face to the modern faster is better mindset.

Re: Heavy pills in the 308win?
Usually the heavier pills are meant to be used in magnums...I don`t know if they will be soft enough to work on lower velocities..
I used some Sierra game kings (220 grains sbt if I'm not mistaken) in 8mm which failed to open up on 8x57 velocities.
After I did some reading on the website of the manufacturer ,I saw that those bullets were meat to work on 8mm magnum velocities. - https://www.sierrabullets.com/store/pro ... 220-gr-SBT
Best regards,

The 220 grain Sierra round nose soft point is a short for weight bullet with a thin jacket and soft lead core and was designed for 2200 2,000 to 2400 FPS muzzle velocities.

Re: Heavy pills in the 308win?
I was looking at the 220gn Hornady, it was designed to work in a 30/06 out to 200 yards.
So as a hundred yard and under 308win pill it should be soft enough. Although the 165gn will probably stay my go to round. The 308win is best suited to the 130-168gn pills but this is more a throwback to the thinking if yesteryear then for performance alone.
I definitely do not need a 220gn rn, I just want one, the 150gn Hornady rn for the 30/30 would be the best of both worlds for a hunting bullet, I might wind up using them as my go to bullet.
The thinking about this is more to easily differentiate between my 168gn trailboss loads and my hunting rounds.
I've got more scopes then barrels so I will be able to have a scope zeroed for every load.
I'm working on a very accurate 15gn trailboss load for a low recoil target load for fun at the range, and a 2800fps LR load for reaching out and touching things.

I can almost guarantee you that I could get the 220 to fire out of the 308Win and kill sambar. Get a packet of 220gr woodleighs, some 2208 and start experimenting. ADI lists a 208gr A-Max at 2420fps so getting over 1900fps impact velocity at 100m isn't going to be too hard. Just do it!

I'd rather the 220gn hornady or Sierra, they are designed for use at slower speed.
I think I will give them a go, I was going to use a 165gn Partition as it shoots the same poa as my 168 Amax load.
But as I've said I've got spare scopes and zero a load and scope and swap as needed.

I corrected the velocity range specified by Sierra.stokesrj wrote:The 220 grain Sierra round nose soft point is a short for weight bullet with a thin jacket and soft lead core and was designed for 2200 2000 to 2400 FPS muzzle velocities.

Re: Heavy pills in the 308win?
So at 2400fps starting velocity it should still open at 200m according to my shooting solutions as its just doing the 2000fps required.
Well a tad under but but that doesn't matter, I wasn't looking at shooting past 150m with it and its only 2&3/4" low at 200m with a 100m zero.
Well I might have to work out a load for ut5 then, it seems perfect.

I tried 220gr Hornady in a 308 win Rem 700 VLS, i remember they gave me tight small groups. Used it for roedeers with succes. I will remember i used Norma 202 powder, Norma brass, Cci primers.

I'd go for the shortest, softest 220 you can get. Short could be important with low velocity and 11" twist.
From the input here that seems to be the 220 Sierra.

I seriously ponder why bother when you have the Hornady 180g RN

A very simple answer, because I want to.Gun Barrel Ecologist wrote:I seriously ponder why bother when you have the Hornady 180g RN
There is no need to or any reason why its better or anything like that, its simply a case of I want to try it for fun.
Its that simple.

Re: Heavy pills in the 308win?
Thinking a bit more about this and have the following thoughts.
1/ Charles uses the 220 Woodie out of a 19.5" barreled 06 and it expanded fine on his hog deer.
2/ I don't know if Charles has clocked his load, but I would be surprised if it tops 2300 out of the 19.5" barrel.
3/ Your 308 barrel appears to be fast, so you may get very close to Charles' speed.
4/ The 220 Sierra was quite popular amongst sambar hunters in the cup'n core days, including in 300mags, and a mate shot his NT buff with the same bullet from an 06.
Conclusion: The Woodie will expand at 308 velocities, and may expand better than the Sierra. Unless it eats up much more powder space than the Sierra, I would try the 220 Woodie.

Agreed, Australian quality projectiles on your door. Why not try them and see how they go.
