Speer bullets

Post by JPBlaser »

Hello guys,

Has anyone got experience with Speer 165 grain 30 cal. SPBT bullets? I intend to use such projectile for red, fallow and roe deer,as well as wild boar(european) and predators(jackals and foxes),max distance up to 200 meters. I'm currently using Hornady Interlock 165 grain BTSP.

Best regards,
Jordan

I've used several standard rounds including the Speer 140gn pills in the 6.5x55, accounted for a lot of red deer that one.
I prefer the more standard pills these days, I know controlled expansion gets all the glory but these older cop and core pills have been putting meat on the table for a very long time now.

I am a big fan of Speer Hot Core bullets. They are a superb hunting bullet. In .308 they come in 150g and 165g (and others) . . .
The flat base won't hurt you out to the 200 yds you mentioned.

I shoot gongs up to 500-600 meters ,at game I limit my shots up-to 200 meters out of hunting ethics reasons...
I also don`t like to develop application specific loads... I want to create one load that does it all... 165 grains at 800 m/s muzze velocity should be good enough for everything I intend to use it for. Gongs don`t care what hits them, but game does... :D I want clean kills and as much as possible clean meat.
Although as I read on their web site... it might appear that those will be too soft for my intended use..

Best regards,

I load the 165gn partition and 168gn Zmax as my all round loads and weight of choice.
It's the best mix of BC, SD for penetration and velocity.

Our tradition here is to take every bit of usable game meat and for those reasons I don`t like it if there is a big wound ,a lot of haemorrhage and a lot of lead contamination.
A-max/Z-max are perfect for predators, but not on edible animals because they disintegrate ,specially if you shoot the animal from under 200 metres distance...

I used them for a while in my 30/06. I used to use Sierra 165 SPBT but found they weren't expanding well in goats. I was told to switch to the Speer as they were a bit softer. Certainly worked well on goats and a few deer.

The Sierra's are much harder then any other cup and core bullet, I've had poor expansion on side on shots with awesome penetration from raking and angled shots.
I prefer the speer, and probably the Hornady most of all.

I have used speer hotcor 270 grain projectiles in my 9.3x64 Brenneke for 30 years.
Really it's the only load I need now.
Very accurate, reliable, and cheap.

The SPBT Speers aren't HotCor.

The SPBTs are likely to fragment and splatter more meat than the flat base HotCor.

I find less splatter and more excessive mushroom, well unless it's an up close hit on heavy bone.

I like them better because of that.

It's a 6 of one, half dozen of another type situation.

Both bullets do about the same, so whichever is more accurate or cost less, even what is available on the shelf at your LGS.
