Question for the Aussies - 9.3x62 cases

Post by Rifletuner » Mon Aug 26, 2019 8:54 pm

Hi all

My son has decided he wants a 9.3x62 as a new sambar rifle. Its a great choice, and I am in the process of sourcing parts for him at the moment.

Normally, I buy the best brass I can find for a new rifle, and it lasts me a long time. But for this sort of hunting, I think we will end up losing a lot of cases over time. So I am thinking that instead of buying 100 Lapua or Norma cases, I might look at a few lower priced cases that are more disposable. But is there such a thing? Maybe I am looking for unobtainium? Anyhow, open to suggestions.

I used PPU brass, I didn't mind loosing it and it was as accurate as anything else.
As, a, matter of fact I mostly shot PPU factory ammunition, it was accurate, inexpensive and kills really well. :handgestures-thumbup:

Thanks for the suggestion. I did a quick google and it looks like the Prvi ammo is a lot cheaper than the alternatives. Different retailers have it listed from $33 to $39 a box of 20. So pretty decent compared to the other factory rounds. I will see if I can find any in stock locally.

I have only bought one box of factory loaded ammo in the last 15-20 years, so its shocking to see the prices for some brands of factory loads. Some of the good quality Euro 9.3x62 loads are being advertised for over $150 a box of 20.

Yeah I'd go the PPU/Highland road, depending on where you are in Melbourne try Centreway or O'Reillys. :handgestures-thumbup:

Thanks. Of those two, O'Reills is probably the best option. I will give them a call.

I've got a bit of the highland barss and it's been fine. I just found the RCBS shell holders don't like them and sometimes get a bit sticky.

I bought a 100 cases of hornady brass from magnum sports. Loaded them up with 286gr interlocks and got sub moa with 4 x scope. Cheap as chips.

PPU ammo is ok. I don`t personally like the brass ,but it`s ok for the price and for the intended application.

Yeah, I was looking at Hornady brass, and thought maybe thats a decent option. I am pretty sure I can get Sako cases from the LGS for within a dollar or 2 of a pack of Hornady brass. So I may just end up using Sako and be done with it. The main grip I have seen from people with the Prvi/Highland brass is that it can be difficult to get into a case holder, so I avoid any of that with either Hornady or Sako cases.

RCBS . I’ve got one especially for 9.3x62 cases and a 30/06 one as well. Depends on make of brass as to which one I use.

That’s what I normally use for the 9.3. Why? Because when I bought that FN Commercial in 9.3x62 about 30 years ago, the rifle came with a heap of reloading gear ( back then 9.3 stuff was like rocking horse manure in Australia) and the previous owner said “ don’t loose that shell holder, it’s been made special..but if you do then you’ll get by with a 308/30.06 holder.

Anyway that’s what I use. 👍

I do remember those days when no one had the 9.3. Now it’s like assholes. Everyone has one. 🤣🤣🤣
