6.5x57 vs the others

Post by Gun Barrel Ecologist »

For some reason I keep finding rifles chambered in either the 6.5x57 or 6.5x57R around the traps of late.

I'm semi familiar with the ballistics, origins and reputations of the 6.5x55, 6.5x65, 6.5x68 & 6.5/.284 but until recently the x57 hasn't caught my notice despite being (I believe  ) the oldest of the lot.

Is there anything it can do that the x55 can not or vice versa?

Other than 'dancing to the beat of a different drummer', is there any advantages to owning a rifle in the round?

It has a skosh more case capacity than the 6.5X55 and in the Blaser and Sauer it is a faster twist, should do a little better with the 140s than the 6.5.

The biggest difference is that the case head is 8mm (.30/06) size instead of the X55 case head. Second, it's easy to make from 8X57, .30/06, etc if you don't have brass. I have owned two (still have an R93 barrel for sale) and I like it a lot. I have used cheap 131 grain S&B ammo in both of them and haven't needed more on deer. I did shoot some old round nose 175 grain ammo in my Mauser in that caliber and was impressed by how it killed at 250 yards range.

All the 6.5's in that range work and perform pretty much the same, I really don't see much difference between them.

Except the 6.5x57R would be a lot classier....because it would be fired from a K95 :D

Hmmm, I will have to concede that point.
