Trailboss loads
Anyone got one for the .223?
IMR suggests 4g under a 55g pill for 1074fps but I'm hoping for a load of similar velocity with a 40g V Max - should I start at 3g?

Re: Trailboss loads
Carefull going to light with the powder, tends not to seal the case neck too well.

What if you crip the case?SPEEDY wrote:Carefull going to light with the powder, tends not to seal the case neck too well.

Re: Trailboss loads
Presumably under loading will just see the projectile fail to leave the barrel, now crimping and underloading

Re: Trailboss loads
Just make sure that you use brass which was shot at least once (or even better twice) from that particular barrel.
Then it's "modified" and aligns better to the chamber which makes it seal better.
What is the twist rate of your .223 barrel? Are you sure it will stabilize the bullet @ 1050fps?

Not advocating underloading and i dont know a TB load for the 223 as i have never tried to load sub sonics for it.Gun Barrel Ecologist wrote:Presumably under loading will just see the projectile fail to leave the barrel, now crimping and underloading

Re: Trailboss loads
no that wont help, the low pressure isnt enough to expand the case and you get blow back down the outside of the case (I have been there) the other problem is secondary explosion, and under load can be a lot worse then medium over loading and can split or blow up the case.Ultrabat wrote:What if you crip the case?SPEEDY wrote:Carefull going to light with the powder, tends not to seal the case neck too well.
When working on light loads I like fill 75-80% of the case with the slowest powder I can get.
Trail boss is good for that as it has a lot of bulk per weight.

Hmm, so if you're not sure what rifle it was last shot in and FL resized it back to minimum you've done the wrong thingicebug wrote:Just make sure that you use brass which was shot at least once (or even better twice) from that particular barrel.

It is a 1 in 9 twist barrel AFAIK

Re: Trailboss loads
Depends on the load, if its too light yes, if its not then its fine.
It all has to do with the brass expanding to seal the chamber.

Re: Trailboss loads
Well after resizing (probably too far) and priming I followed the instructions above.
Filled to case neck is 8.6g of TB, 0.7 x 8.6 = 6.02, so following IMR instructions we have a starting load of ~6g
IMR load data from http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp lists 4g under a 55g in the max loads column
Looks like I'll have to load some with 4, 5, & 6g and see what groups and doesn't scare the neighbours

.22 and them new heavy pill shorts, quiet as caps and will drop a fox at 40 yards.
Not as much fun to make and tinker with, easy but.

Re: Trailboss loads
GBE I did it for my 243 and found 5.8gr of trail boss got a 95gr pill going 1080fps. I used a mag primer as well. Only problem it was inconstant with accuracy as the powder didn't fill the case the best which played around with groups but 50-70meters was fine. I was told that the shotgun powder was better for the small cals as it fulls the case more and helps with accuracy. But I got sick of playing with it and gave it away.
Measure it, when it’s on the deck
