18x1 thread protector for Match barrel (where to find one?)

Postby Mcardenal » Mon Sep 25, 2017 10:13 pm

Hello All,

I just purchased a used .223 Match barrel. Everything is great and I don't think it's even ever been fired. However, the original owner attached a Muzzle brake and misplaced the thread protector. I will be removing the Blake but don't want to leave threads exposed.

Where can I find a blaser original or at least one that matches the contour of the match barrel?

Thanks

Martin

I think if you contact Blaser USA they will be able to help you. There are other sources, but if it were me, that's where I would start.

If you have no luck there just get one made. Very easy would take a smithy no time at all.
Measure it, when it’s on the deck

Any engineering place can have an apprenticeknock one up in no time, its the coating that can be tricky to match.

I made one for my 22lr barrel as the one the previous owner had on it was a shocker and the wrong color.
I made mine during a lunch break and cold blued it when I got home, looks like it came from the factory.

Thanks guys.
I called BlaserUSA first, since I really want it to be original as possible. They are usually really good about service. However they didn't have immediate knowledge about availability and they placed me on hold for like 10 min before the call just dropped.
I found a smith that will make one for $40 that will match the contour and depth (color and finish......not so much)

Cheaper then ebay, and gives the apprentice some practice.
But all they need to do is face a bit mild steel, drill it 17mm D and about an inch deep, run an M18 tap till it bottoms, turn it to 22mm D and part it off.
The part ebd then jyst needs a kiss with a debur tool and then a little cold bluing.
Very quick and easy job, at $40 minus the cost of material thats about $79 an hour.

Damn, I'm definitely getting a lathe after I put a work shed up in the new place, I could do a lot of jobs like that just by mail order.

Hey Speedy,

Yeah, I agree. $40 is quite a bit more than some of the off the shelf protectors that wouldn't match my barrel. Those can be found for less than half. However, $40 is still a lot cheaper than buying a lathe and a few feet of bar stock for a 1 inch piece.

Actually I thought it was a good price, an off the shelf one unless it's an a actual blaser one might be cheaper, but its also probably not going to match the barrel exactly.
There is also a little thrown in gor tool and machine wear.
So $40 for a custom one is actually quite reasonable, it just got me thinking that it might be s good way to make some spare cash and keep busy.

Back years agovwhen ago when I did pest control there was a rip off.
To treat a house was $25 labor, $5-10 chemicals and a price tag of $350.
Now that was a rip off.

I just saw this. I believe I have one left over from a previous barrel. Send me your mailing address
