Can a standard contour R93 Forend be modified to safari?

Post by Mcardenal »

Hello all,

I am thinking about picking up a used R93 (standard contour) luxus forend in order to use a match (heavy contour) barrel i ordered in 6.5 Creedmoor.

The match/heavy barrel contour for the 6.5 Creedmoor was ordered to primarily work with an LRS2. However, i want to be able to use it on my hunting platform (R93 Luxus).

So the questions are;
- can a standard contour forend be milled out to accommodate a heavy contour barrel?
- how much can i expect to pay for one?
- is there a way to tell by looking at a picture what contour a forend is?

Thanks

MC

Yes, it can, I have had Blaser USA open a barrel channel for me. The standard contour is 17mm the Semi Weight is 19mm and the Safari and fluted match are 22mm. I believe Blaser USA charges $95 to open up the channel. There is no charge if you buy it new from one of the dealers.

Blaser actually made an R93 varmint, now that would be a nice one to have.

I actually would have preferred one of them over my GRS stocked professional.

Here are a couple of pics of a professional stock with the barrel channel widened to accept the fluted match barrel but with the smaller diameter (17mm) standard profile barrel in place. As I said earlier most find this gap acceptable, I find it unacceptable. Not too bad if viewed from nearly straight overhead, but at an angle you can see all the way down to the bottom of the barrel channel, looks like a place for debris to collect to me.

My off road is like that, it's no problem and hardly noticeable.

Maybe hardly noticeable to you, but glaringly obvious to me. I get that we have different views, that is the spice of life. :)

Ok
I picked this guy up on eBay for $100 (hope is was a good deal).
Anyhow, it almost looks like its already wide enough for the heavier contour barrel?
What do you guys think?

I think you made a good buy. To me that looks like a wide barrel channel. I guess you'll find out for sure once you try it!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

As for the stock in question, I think the Easiest way if you don't have it in your mitts is to as the seller to measure the outside width at the skinniest point which is the narrow before the schnabel flares again. To fit a 22mm safari / match barrel you want a 24+ channel, if that skinny point is only just over an inch then you don't have much room to play.

I personally think a 19mm semi weight is as wide as the schnabel of the Off-road stock will take.

As for appearance with standard barrels, you either get over it or buy another stock - it's a bit like the free floating barrels on the BD14, another member is convinced the .22 Hornet barrel arrangement is ideal for drying tea towels whilst sitting in your deer blind :shifty:
