Something for the Fisherman.

Post by SPEEDY »

Ever wanted to keep a load of worms fresh for a weeks trip away fishing?
Ever wanted to keep worm farm for fishing, but are short of space?
Only fish a little but would like worms ready to go when the mood strikes you?

Well here's the cheap answer.

Take two 5lt (1.3-1.5 gallon) or close enough, drill around a dozen small holes in the bottom of one.
Then cut either fiber weed matting or worm matting (whatever is cheapest) using the lid as the template for the top, and the base of the bucket as the template for the bottom.
Then place the small on in the base of the bucket with holes, fill with a 50/50 mix of garden soil and mulch (whatever you find around the garden) and mix.
Then add two or 3 punnets of worms, you could go up to ten if your just going away for a week fishing.
Place the bucket with holes in the bucket with the solid base, and put the other piece of matting on top and wet, excessive water will drain to the bottom bucket.
Then drill a half dozen holes or whatever you like in the lid and put it on.
Now your worms are in a portable worm farm, leave in the kitchen to put scraps in or someplace cool.
Whatever worms you don't use will breed up for your next trip, its a self sustained bait system that only needs your kitchen scraps or a bit of mulch.
Remove excess soil as needed and the "tea" as they call it that collects in the bottom bucket makes great fertilizer.

The total cost including the worms was $35, the worms were $9:50 a punnet.
It will save a lot of money in the long run.

If you have ever seen the worm eggs in a tackle shop tub of worms then you know they breed easy, you already have a second generation ready to go.

If you've seen these in your bait shop worms, then you have twice as many as you thought you bought.
