Mount question for R8 and Schmidt Bender PM II 5-25x56

Post by Arminho » Thu Feb 01, 2018 10:27 pm

Hi guys,

I'm new to the community and am asking for some advice. I'm building up a .308 R8 professional S and just ordered a Schmidt Bender PMII 5-25x56. I plan to use this for long range precision courses and North American hunting as well (deer, elk, bear, etc). What saddle mount do you guys recommend? This is my first Blaser and I'm a little overwhelmed with how little I know about the QD saddle mount.

Can someone give me a few recommendations?

My other long range rifle is a 30-06 Remington 700 with a custom stock and a Nightforce SHV F1 4-14x50. The NF scope is on a NF direct mount that's all in one piece, and it's quite accurate.

Thanks,
Arminho

Hi Arminho
I use the picittiny rail on mine that way I can also use the same scope on another rifle if needed. Works great.

I see. Which rings are you using right now, and did you just get the standard Blaser Picatinny rail?
I know Blaser has a QD saddle mount for both Schmidt Bender external rail scopes and for Schmidt Bender convex rail scopes.

Hi Arminho,
I use a standard blaser qd saddle mount with a NF atacr on my 338lap and a rail mount / sadle mount with my Zeiss v8 2.8-20 on top my 300wthby. All work great.
Just a quick question at what range do you expect to use your 308 to kill the game.
I’m maxed out on my 300wthby at 1200m elevation of a range 800-850 m, after that there isn’t enough energy for the the bullet to perform / open up as per manufacture recommendation.

I'm having a hard time deciding whether the standard QD saddle mount will work with the 56mm objective or whether I need to get the "high" QD saddle mount. I called BlaserUSA today and they told me the standard 'may' work but the high 'definitely will.' Unfortunately, the high has twice the distance from rings to base according to the gentleman i spoke with. I believe he said the distance from ring to base on the standard was 5mm and for the high was 10mm.

I'm assuming your NF atacr is a 56mm objective, as well as your Zeiss V8? If so, I'd feel pretty comfortable trying the Standard QD saddle mount with 34mm rings.

I don't plan on using the 308 for game past 250-300m. I do plan on doing precision rifle courses out to 1000m over the next few months and in the future.

I can remember if mine were high mounts or standard. I ended getting my mounts from Euro optics in the USA. They advised me what would fit for each scope. I do admit I have a cheek comb
Also both scopes are 56mm.
My Zeiss topped out at 1100 m range

I have a feeling the ring heights are 4mm and 7mm but I could be wrong.

If going the full target rig for long range gong clanging you'd be better off with a 20Moa Innomount set up (see page 13 here http://www.innogun.de/fileadmin/downloa ... _DE_EN.pdf) and a Bradley cheek rest to fill any gap made by higher than usual rings http://www.bradleycheekrest.com/

When hunting I'd swap the above set up for the likes of a 3-10x42 / 2-12x50 etc in a standard saddlemount as 25x and a christmas tree retical arent necessary on a deer at 200m

These both clear my barrels. I think the Blaser mount is standard hight, and the tacticool one is low. (around 7mm)

Are they "tier one" rings on the Blaser saddle base on the 5-25 SB in 40moa ?

The rings and Blaser mount are both 0 MOA. When I mounted those, I had no long range shooting near by. I should switch them
to 20 MOA now that I live in the desert.

I've also mounted one in the INNO Mount and it worked fine.

Just to confirm, your PMII 5-25x56 is sitting on a 'standard' Blaser mount, has flip up lens caps, AND clears the standard Blaser R8 barrel? How much clearance do you have? This is promising. If this is the case, then I'd rather order the "standard' Blaser mount instead of the 'high' Blaser mount. Both Blaser carrying gunshops around me were not very helpful.

I’m sure if you call europtics there in the Us they would be more than helpful with clarifying it . I bought my sadle mount for my NF from them, and you can buy the mounts from them. Great price and service .

Can I ask what torque specification you tightened those rings to and what barrels they go on? I recently had a 2.5-10x56 Zenith slip in a standard saddle mount after being used on my .375H&H

I use a fixed Picatinny rail for my NF 5.5-25x56 with Warne QD rings and a Swarovski 56mm objective with a std. Blaser QD rail mount.
