Scope for LR 308
Looking for something with dial up capability. Unlikely to be used past 600 yards, so maybe not LR in today's world.
I've guesstimated that I need only around 15 to maybe 20 MOA elevation. Windage would be nice, but I am no wind doper and would not take chances in a stiff breeze.
I do not like fussy reticles, or excessive weight. Would also prefer nothing bigger (or smaller) than a 42mm objective, but would consider 50. Nothing bigger.
The March 2.5/25/42 with the low tac turrets and the duplex ret. seems very close. There are some Z6 and Z8 Swaro options which are appealing, but I don't like the spidery thin reticles. I also do not know if the precision and repeatability of the Swaro turrets is sufficient for my use.
I have, and like the Zeiss ASV on the 2.5/10HT, but it may be a bit limited for this application.
Input welcome

I have the same March scope and there fine in good light. I found for the price and excellent moa vale turrets NF are very hard to beat. But if your after something a bit more expensive with kick ass glass go the Kahles K525i. That’s scope porn.
Measure it, when it’s on the deck

I used a Leupold Mark 4, I've used both the 6.5-20x and 3.5-10x and both were outstanding to 800m do will do what you want.

Re: Scope for LR 308
I recently bought one of the new Nightforce SHV 4-14X50 F1 scopes. You can see a pic of it on my Annie. I was to be candid, leery of the lower grade Nightforce as I own several NXS and Competition scopes. The NXS and competition scopes are in my opinion the standard for turret accuracy and dependability so I was worried about the quality of the NXS. But to my surprise the SHV is the equal in optical quality and the turrets track dead on in a box test. It is in my opinion a fantastic value at $1250 retail and $1125 street price in the US.
I’m normally not a fan of first focal plane scopes for hunting but in this case I made an exception because of the excellent MOAR lighted reticle that could be used on any power for hold over or hold off into the wind or the option of using the turrets if desired.
I have several scopes with custom turrets dedicated to a specific load, I favor this set up but am some times frustrated at the lack of flexibility with this approach and am slowly moving to range cards and ballistic calculators for long range use.
Another thing I like about this scope is the only part of the reticle that is lighted is the center cross. I like this much better than the whole reticle lighting of the NXS. It helps mitigate one of the issues I find objectionable when using First focal plane scopes on low power. The reticle is still small but the lighted center works much like a red dot sight drawing your eye to the center for fast action shots.
It is a heavy scope at 30 oz but I am considering it for my back pack chassis 308 where weight is a big factor.

Re: Scope for LR 308
The zeiss victory ht 2.5-10x50 is light weight and with the ASV there will be plenty of clicks for 600 meter shots(at least according to my ballistic calculator).
I would stay away from the tac stuff.
Best regards,

Re: Scope for LR 308
Thanks for the input
DH 338 That Kahles is wee bit more than I wanted to spend for this project, and probably more than I need, but yes, definitely scope porn
SPEEDY, thanks for that. I had heard that the Mark 4 turrets lacked precision, but obviously they are good enough for the job. Unfortunately they don't seem to be made anymore, and Leupold's offerings in that sphere now seem to be either very tacticool or very target focused. Pity, because I am a bit of a Leupy fan.
Bob, I hadn't even looked at the SHV, because, like you I was a bit apprehensive about the low price. Maybe I need to be more open minded The model you have seems the best suited to my use, but the reticles have way too much clutter for my taste and 30oz is simply not on. The 3.5/10 SHV looks to have some potential, and from your experience the value is definitely there, but I am looking for more than 10x. 10x is plenty in open country and good light, but where there is a bit of growth, I like to be able see if there is clear path through the twigs.
JP, I agree 100% on the HT, BUT I want more than 10x on this rifle, otherwise one of these would definitely get a run.
So it will be the little March. 2.5/25/42

If Leupold is not making the m4 anymore, got the SHV.

Re: Scope for LR 308
If it's supposed to be a hunting scope, how about Swarovski Z6i 2.5-15x44 or 3-18x50 with BT and 4A-i reticle?

Re: Scope for LR 308
Thank you. I was optimistic about some of the Swaro offerings but they are needlessly expensive for this use and I really don't like very thin, fussy reticles. I also have some doubts, probably unfounded, about the accuarcy and repeatbility of the adjustments, other than those on their specialized LR scopes
You must have missed this bit in relation to the SHV 4-14x50F1 - "the reticles have way too much clutter for my taste and 30oz is simply not on"
However a bit of research suggests that the accurate adjustments that Bob found are also present in the 3.5/10/42, and in Aus we can get a simple reticle in that model.
Still not enough magnification for the use that is the subject of this thread, but pretty much perfect for something thar related that I am doing, so an SHV 3.5/10/42 with the 4A reticle is coming to me .
Thanks Bob for alerting me to the SHV.

Re: Scope for LR 308
No I like the 3-10x42 with IHR, that's the best hunting reticle I've seen in a while.
The MOAR is probably quite decent as a hunting reticle if you don't focus on the hash marks, I liked the TMR on my Leuapold mark IV's.
But it looks like they dropped the IHR, that bins the SHV for me.
I'd go a Z6i 1.7-10x42 BT L if I was in that boat, but a Zeiss Conquest V4 4-16×44 might do better for you.

Re: Scope for LR 308
I've got friends who had issues with the z6 BTs. It appears the internals are made of plastic and not meant to be used too much.
However ,this is resolved in the Z8 line..

Re: Scope for LR 308
JOE ? I'll Bite SPEEDY - what's JOE ? The IHR is stilll available in some of the SHV line (according to their web site)
I'll take the 4A thanks The little SHV doesn't have a zero stop, unfortunately, but at that price I'll get by without the zero stop.
Hadn't thought about the Conquests, although I have looked at them for other applications
I would find some simple MOA based hash marks helpful -maybe quicker to use with a range card than turrets. Most reticles with this stuff in them simply try to do too much and end up full of clutter.
Mind you I think with Brenton's new wiz-bang binos you don't need hash marks or turrets - might not even need a rifle
Thanks JP. I think someone on here had problems with accuracy of adjustments a while ago, but I don't remember details. I'm definitely not shelling out for a Z8, although the thought did cross my mind.

The JOE reticle is what my auto correct decided the IHR should be, it chooses something different everything I try to write it.

Re: Scope for LR 308
Yeah JOE is here. I would seriously look at Vortex Viper PST gen II in 3-15 × 44. I have one on my Blaser R8 338WM barrel. It has good glass, good turrets that track beautifully, zero stop, illumination and not a superhigh price. I have looked through Brenton's March scope andv IMOO believe March glass is inferior. The only issue is the turret housing is bulkier and you will need high Blaser mounts or buy higher rings or use a blaser ring spacer.
If you want a Euro scope have a look Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42 LT Plex. It has locking turrets.
