Its funny to hear from the keyboard shooters on forums telling you how you need to run 3000 fps or better to win matches due to the "better ballistics" and "less time in the wind". Then you hear guys like Jake Vibbert running his 6 BR basted ammo at 2700 to 2800 fps and winning just about every match going.

There are venues where you do really need that speed, like the Thousand yard Palma match. You need to drive those ballistically inferior 155 and 156 grain 308 Palma bullets to around 3000 FPS to avoid the transonic threshold. That is why all Palma guns have 30” barrels to reach those velocities and why Palma brass has small rifle primers to withstand the high pressures necessary to drive them that fast.

Yes some guys get a bit excited with speeds. Sometimes its more about find a round that's accurate and working with that.Rifletuner wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 3:24 pmIts funny to hear from the keyboard shooters on forums telling you how you need to run 3000 fps or better to win matches due to the "better ballistics" and "less time in the wind". I don't think that speed with that bullet weight from that case is measly. Appears to be very efficient to me.

Yes, I see it a lot with beginners. They fixate on ballistics tables where they are comparing multiple rounds for a minute advantage on paper. But the bottom line is that they need to get out and shoot. A lot of times, what looks good on paper doesn't actually live up to expectations in reality.deerhunter338mag wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 1:27 am

There is no doubt a given cartridge can help, but no cartridge choice is going to override poor fundamentals or a poor wind call. And a lot of new shooters seem to want to buy their way into the winners circle. As long as they buy the "best" gear, they expect their equipment will do all the work.

Re: 6.5x47
This thread encouraged me to find a UK Lockdown "exercise" - so I loaded a series for a new-to-me hunting bullet - Hornady 123gr SST with BR4 primers and Viht N150 powder. At 100 yds, the best load was 38.2gr N150, CBTO 2.13 with SD 3.5 and .71 MOA grouping at 2878 fps (moderator and MagnetoSp3 on). I am liking this calibre a lot and look forward to further testing that load and at longer distances.

Yeah, I know. Preaching to the converted. But I just get blank looks when I tell the people who actually need to hear this.
