Handgun Quotes from "A Rifleman Went To War" by H. McBride

Post by Brew »

"The Webley pistol never appealed to me, probably because of its cumbersome appearance. The thing would shoot however, and it made a dandy club with which to bean an obstreperous prisoner."

"All of these arguments as to the relative merits of the revolver and the automatic pistol will probably continue for another generation....but in spite of all this, I unhesitatingly choose the automatic for actual use in war. Anyone who doubts this can easily satisfy himself by trying to hurriedly reload a revolver in the dark, with a crowd of roughnecks .... jostling you about..."

"The entire case of the pistol may be summed up in "I don't want this thing often, but when I do I want it damn bad."

"Until something better is invented, I believe that the pistol is the best weapon for the(sic) last stand.... he can, with confidence, undertake to handle at least three enemy bayonet men."

"As to the various kinds of pistols used, both by the Allies and the Germans, after all these years during which to think it over, I still believe that the Colt, .45 Automatic is King of Them All."

"Say - wait a minute though. I do happen to remember one instance in which the Luger had wallop enough to do the job right, and maybe I had better tell about it right here......we stepped around the end of a deep traverse and our "point" almost fell over an enemy soldier....it was all over in a second - the kid just swung the belt and that holstered Luger made a circle and came down on top of the soldier's head with a 'womp' - and we went on, leaving the dead man lying there. And that is about the only time I can remember a "slug" from a Luger having sufficient wallop to do a 'bang up' job of things."

It' a good book all around, I'm just glad we are Allies with our German brothers now.

That is a very good book.

If you like it, you will also probably like "SHOTS FIRED IN ANGER", by Lt.Col. John B. George.

As well as Mcbrides other book "THE EMMA GEES".

I've never heard of either one, but they will be the next ones I look for!
