So what were you doing to forget you had a gun on the bonnet for the 10+ seconds the defender takes to get to 40?
I had my son with me and I broke my normal routine I have when I returned to the car. I always place my rifle on the RHS wing whilst I unload and get the truck opened up. On this occasion the rifle was placed on the passenger side wing as I was helping helping my son (7 yrs) with lighting as it was dark. Not being in my line of sight and at night, I just plain missed seeing it when I drove off. With my lad in the truck I was focussed on getting him sorted and chatting about the hunt.

Once when I was soldiering (mid 90's) I drove a couple of hours with a F88 (not mine and I didn't see it placed there) on the wing of a 110 gun buggy...unfortunately in this case the K95 lasted only 5 minutes and jumped free as I cornered on a dirt road.

I will never use the wings again as a temporary shelf...left or righthand side. I could have easily lost my rifle forever.
Hannes will look after you. Who knows they may lose the scope during repairs and give you a new one?
I'll drop Hannes an email soon and see what he recommends. Whatever happens I'm sure it will end up being cheaper to repair than replace.
It happens.... at least it sounds like the damage was manageable and the rifle sure shoots just fine!

Yes, it does happen. Sadly this same thing happened with a rifle my grandfather had built for me when I was a small boy. We never found it. Not a defender, but same kind of deal, loading dogs, in the dark, gravel roads, didn't discover it until we got home. Then it was too late.

Back on topic : -

Dinger, did you try only 2208 ?

I have started loading for my 8x57JRS using 2206H(H4895) and 200 Woodies. I selected 2206H only because that seemed to be the pick from the ADI book. No pressure data supplied, so good chance that something slower may be better for me.

Anyhow, initial testing has shown the chrono flatlining at around 2200 over a three grain spread, topping at 46gn. Pressure still seems reasonably mild. RWS factory 200s nudge 2400 from my 52cm bbl.

Next step is to work up to around 48g of 2206H and see what happens, but the lack of speed is baffling me a little at this stage. I'm being a bit slow with this one, and any further info that you may have would be appreciated.

Just looked at the ADI manual, that speed with 06H is bizarre

I'd be inclined to buy a drop tube and jump straight to '09 rather than keep wasting time with 06H

I've only used 2208 as I have a very large stash of it.....from memory the velocity during work up was close to 2600 so I called it done.

2206 is a faster powder and I would expect it to not perform as well as 2208.....2209 could be better as mentioned by GBE.

I had loads to shoot past 49gr but once I saw the velocity creep up I called it done as I expected pressures to start to spike.

I'll have a dig around to find some evidence of the measured velocity and my QL screen cuts. I can run 2206 through QL with the Woodies to ballpark what you should get.

Thank you. QL for 2206H would also be interesting. My initial thoughts were to use 2208 with the 200s and maybe I was right. 220RN woodies are interesting also - 2208 or 2209 ?

Even more bizarre when 2206H is shown as giving the most speed with 220s. I would expect 2209 to come into play with 250s and be too slow for 200s.

Well I got a call yesterday to say my 170g SSTs should arrive in my local next week (I know, a gun shop that rings you, I'm struggling to believe it myself :o    ) I was planning on grabbing some '06H and working up from 47g but I'm now just eyeing off the 2208 I have already in the cupboard

And by 200g Woodleighs I take it you mean the 64F's (PP) Geoff brought out for the 8x68 & .325WSM rather than the 64Bs (RN) which are the traditional 196g? I've already got a couple of boxes of the latter :D Though far as I know my barrel is still in Germany

06H for 170s and 180s I reckon. Unless like Dinger you have lots of 2208 and no 2206H :).

Yeah, I have the PPs (and the 196 and 220 R/Ns). Haven't bothered to section one, but I'll bet something near and dear to you  that the jacket is the same thickness as the 196RNs, the 308s, and the 7mms. And they should have the internal splits as well.
I have no reservations about them expanding, but had a chat with someone at Woodleigh to check and they said they should be fine at 8x57 speeds.

Where did you source the partitions? I'm having difficulty finding 8mm bullets that arent for paper punching up here in Brisbane
I recently bought 150 200 NPs from Magnum, who sourced them from Nioa. Nioa had more in stock than I bought so you might be able to get a couple of boxes via a dealer.

I have 2 boxes of the SSTs sitting at my local with my name on it, and I recently discovered I do actually have some 2206H
Bought it for the 5,6x52R, developed what I recorded as a just MoA load that showed promise, moved state and packed up all my reloading gear, and forgot all about it by the time I'd set up the gun room
Long story short it might pay to buy a fresh bottle

So Dinger, does the load in the OP work? ;)

I don't have the SST's in my list so I used the Speer 170 instead, I short seated at 3.15 as this is a magazine rifle, is this correct?......really doesn't matter which powder you use.

Let me know if you have any tweaks.

Here we go. Finally got some groups down.

(Cartridge) 8 x57 JRS

(Brand of bullet) Nosler Partition

(Weight of bullet) 200gn

(Brand of brass) RWS

(Type of powder) AR2208/Varget

(Grains of powder) 51

(Brand and type of primer) Federal 210GM

(COL) 3.19"

(CBTO)

(FPS) 2538 (49g was 2380/90)

(Rifle) K 95

(Barrel Length) 52cm (20.47")

(Scope) Zeiss Victory HT 1.5/6

(Weather and conditions) 20ish C. No wind

(Accuracy at 100yds) .80" for 3

(Notes) 50.5 g was .64" for 3. 49.5 and 50 were around 1.2" I really need to retest 51g and try 51.5. I expect 51.5 will see the groups start to open, but I would like to know for sure. NOTE - Did this and yes groups do start to open, but only very slightly - 51.5 only a whisker over 1".

Interestingly I seem to have excellent accuracy from 50.5 to 51.5. I will split the difference between the two best groups (50.5 and 51) and load 50.7

My goal out of the short barrel with the 200NP is 2500 with accuracy, and I have got it at 50.5. Factory RWS 196g is 2380/2390 in my barrel.

Next step is the 220 Woodies. Preliminary mucking around suggests that an accurate 2400 with 2209/H4350 should be quite achievable.

Of course this excellent (to my mind) performance is due entirely the fact that the cartridge has a rim

This also seems to confirm that 8x57 is well suited to short barrels. I expect the calibre would be excellent in a Tracker, particularly loaded with 220 Woodies.

Good work. Keen to see outcomes of larger woodies
