Air NZ are indeed great to deal with, BUT the security screening staff are not employed by Air NZ, or any other airline.
Either way, your mate's experience suggests that the screening staff now know the rules, which is a welcome improvement.
Probably we can thank the numbers of Aus. hunters travelling O/S for the improvement, because there have been plenty of arguments and problems in the past, which hopefully have been the catalyst for improvements in the knowledge of security staff.
