Finally got a Sauer drilling-tons of pictures

Post by Dilly541 »

I have been diligently watching for a good drilling for a few years. My search led me to my Blaser ES67 that I posted about previously. That gun really got the fire burning. the only thing holding me back was the prices on used drillings in Canada. Well, a few weeks back I scored one that was reasonably priced probably due to the fact it looked pretty well used. Its a 16x16 over 7x65R. Near as I can tell, its a Sauer 3000, with a dural receiver and 25.5" barrels choked Mod and Full. It has a 2-7 Hensoldt Wetzlar diavari scope on claw mounts. I "think" its a luxus (not sure) and it has been fitted with a Mauser recoil pad.
Image
The wood was a litlle dinged up, the engraving was grimy, and the bluing was pretty thin on the barrels from carry wear. It didnt cock all three barrels every time you opened it and it had a cracked horn trigger guard.
Image
I have access to an ultrasonic cleaner at work, so it took it down and cleaned it thoroughly.
Image
It came out sparkling clean! It solved the cocking issue as well and made the cocking indicators work perfect.
Image
Next was the stocks. I steamed out all the dents I could, re-pointed the checkering, and gave it a hand rubbed oil finish. Also fixed the horn trigger guard with epoxy.
Image
Barrels next...Stipped them to the white...
Image
At this point...a few of my buds thought I was crazy. A lot of work for a gun I hadn't even shot. Regardless, the barrels were given 11 passes of slow rust blue...
Image
I carefully reassembled it...

Ta dah!

So...off I went to the range to try the shotgun barrels as I didn't have any rifle shells. While I was there, I happen to run into a guy who "knew a guy" who had some old 7x65R shells he would sell...Here are the patterns. Top are right and left barrels without scope, bottom is with scope. 20yds.

Got all these cartridges from one guy...$60

Off to the range last Wednesday. Shot a round of skeet to get acquainted and a round of 5 stand to test the chokes. Shot the gun well. Skeet targets disappeared. Also put three through the rifle. Rising solid 3 shot group at 50yds. Happy!

I am so excited about this gun, i am waiting for something to go wrong. The ONLY thing so far i have to address is the LOP. The gun is short for me. I could use another 1 1/4" to make her fit.

So...just when you thought I was done, I was at a gun show today and notice this in a case.
Image

It was part of another set, but I managed to talk the guy into selling it to me. Its a Krieghoff Einstecklauf .22 long rifle insert that fits the 16ga barrel.
Image

So, anyone have one off these? I assume the little roll pin under the ejector has to be fitted to my gun's ejector and it appears the whole face may need to be milled or filed slightly to allow the gun to close. It protrudes just slightly above the chamber.
Image

I am seeking advice on the gun in general. Any tips or opinions are welcome. I am new to drillings.

Thanks for putting up with my enthusiasm.

Congratulations, you should be extremely proud of your work so far.
It looks fantastic!
I have 2 drillings in the safe and one on order.
They are really interesting and extremely useful firearms.
You wont look back now.

The 7x65R is a great cartridge.
Enjoy Allan

Thats damn fine work and a good score in the insert.

I've always found it more enjoyable hunting with a gun that you have put so much much time in restoring.
It feels more familiar and and there's a sence of pride.
I'm soft and I don't care.

Yes I have a Sauer 3000 Model Export and a Krieghoff Einstecklauf. Yes you need to get a gun smith to modify the extractor, then stamp it. The stamp should line up with the line of the einstecklauf. It will shoot very accurately. I have one in 22 Mag.

You have a luxus model and looks like you have cleaned it up nicely.

Congratulations and good restoration. Please see my February 16, 2014 comment in "Krieghoff EL 44 barrel insert" in this drilling combination section of the forum.
