9.3x74R vs. Moose

Post by MM »

Shot a moose with the 9.3 using a 286 grain partition. Multiple shots into the chest before it died from a maximum shot distance of 153 yards down to 25 yards. The bull would go down then just kept getting back up. He had been fighting another bull so maybe he was full of adrenaline, but not sure. I recovered two of the bullets, one under the hide on the off side and the other was sticking out of the hide base first and the mushroom stopped it from exiting so it definitely tumbled. I expected this to kill with a little more authority but in the end it did the job. I might try some different bullets.

They did what they were supposed to do, I love the way they mushroom.
But we have all had animals that just wouldn't die no matter how much you hit them or even where.

What's important is it didn't get away wounded and you put it on the deck.
I'm soft and I don't care.

Those partitions show some nice expansion, with plenty of shank on the back, so in theory, a good design for strait line penetration. Certainly not a bullet "failure", and a North American moose is a friking big animal. But would be interesting to know what other bullets would have done.

I think those partitions performed perfectly. Any chance of some pictures of the moose and rifle ? Shiraz, Canadian or Alaskan moose ?

Oh yeah, well done on bagging your bull.

Well done 👍 if it weren’t for Covid I should have been in NW BC chasing moose myself; right now!

Were you in an “any bull “ area ? I’ve always been restricted to a 4 brow tine or 60” bull area for my Alaskan hunts. Still haven’t pulled the trigger on a moose yet. Now booked for 2022. I hope the planes are flying by then.

Be interested to see photos of your bull and the terrain you hunted in. 👍

Cheers

Congrats on the bull. Would love to see some pictures. FWIW, I shoot our smaller Scandi moose with 9,3s and they get up or simply run off without appearing to be hit. BUT they all go down just fine near by if I have shot well. I do not for a moment fault the cal or the various bullets I've used, they are big animals and can absorb a bit of punishment. I wouldn't be too worried.

Go to pages 15&16 of kipplauf hunting and pictures are there. I was restricted to a 60” bull mine was 63” and aged at 7-8 years old.

The 286 9.3 Partitions have the partition a long way forward when compared to other, smaller calibre Partitions.

This a deliberate feature aimed at killing bigger animals which may need a bit more penetration. Also means less fragmentation and a smaller diameter mushroom, both of which can lead to slower kills. The low impact velocity doesn't help.

Swings and roundabouts.

I've had very similar results with my 9.3X74R and the 286 Partition on Alaska/Youkon Moose. In my case I was shooting a drilling with only one rifle barrel so only shot them once. They all ran off, and because of my bowhunting experiences, I waited 30-45 minutes before taking up the trail. They were all found dead after a flight distance of 50-125 yards. Perhaps, I would have shot them multiple times also if there would have been an opportunity but there wasn't due to the thick brush.
Conversely, I have also shot several moose with traditional whitetail deer loads such as the 270 Winchester 130 grain Winchester Power Point and Remington 150 grain CoreLokt from 30-06 and 308. They seemed to kill the moose quicker but I always placed them through the rib cage for a rear lung shot, where the 286 Partitions I would shoot them through the shoulder.

Any of the shots would have killed it but my guide advised to keep shooting so I did. I think he was afraid it would head towards the river and go in.
