Headspace, how much is to much for R8?

Post by 9.3x64 »

Just out of curiosity, when full length resizing for an R8, what do the brains trust reguard as ideal shoulder bump for an R8?
I have adjusted my FL dies as per Redding instructions to just kiss the shell holder and I am getting a measured 5 thou of setback, compared to a fired case in the same chamber.
Function is perfect in terms of feeding.

Is this ideal, or should I turn the die down slightly and reduce setback a couple of thou, or just forget about it?

Opinions please...

Yes, recent years have been more reloading and not enough hunting...

why don't you come a shoot a few BGR matches up at Ripley. It's good practice.

Yes, I might just do that.
I am going to go out to Ripley with Mark (you met him yesterday I think) and work up a load for my Merkel double.
But I just have to fit a pad and get the lop correct first.

5 thou of shoulder setback seems a bit much. I would generally go for 2 thou at the most....

For hunting ammo I go for 2-4 thou with a leaning toward 4 just to be sure they chamber when I need' em too.... I don't make claims to great expertise ...

I generally agree with others and try to maintain .003" of shoulder set back. However I find that controlling that dimension precisely is not likely. Temperature, lube, number of times the case has been fired and whether it has been annealed or not contribute to a wide tolerance of where that shoulder lands. I finally settled on a window of .002" to .004 for most centerfire calibers.

Agree with what's been said. .005" is too much for good case life.

Thanks gentleman, I guess I was also wondering... does the R8 need a little more to lock into battery reliably, sort of like how a semi automatic does?

Didn't have a head space gauge to measure so I had no idea. But now that I have they have been sitting around 10 thousand. Having said that I have been using RWS, Lapua, Norma and Geco. I've bought in bulk so I'm probably 4 or 5 reloads in and I'll toss them when they start going. Today was the first Geco in 30-06 that I've had a neck split. I'm getting my act on annealing for competition and now setting the R93 to about 3-5 thou for each cartridge.

That should improve your case life, and you still have a margin for reliability.
