Newbie scope question
Hi All...Brand new to the Blaser world. After carrying a giant 40 lb rifle/case around...and talking to a few European friends, I think I'm ready for an R8. I've been reading this forum with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, I'm stuck at the scope.
I like long range, and I like my scopes from Zero Compromise, Kahles, and Night Force. They are heavy duty...but also just plain heavy. Due to the Blaser rail mount and the idea of a lighter-weight scope, I've been looking at the Swaro Z8i. I've never held one, and I'm concerned...does light-weight mean less rugged than my heavier scopes? The Z8i 3.5-28 looks great on paper. Would it work as a great all-around scope? I've been invited on my first driven hunt, so I'm wondering if the 3.5 power is too high. If so, should I go with something like the Blaser B2 2-12 scope? Or does a red-dot (or low power 1-6) plus something on the higher side make more sense?
Thanks in advance

Re: Newbie scope question
The Blaser B2 1-6 x 24 IC is a great scope. A bit bulky but superb optics. That would be my pick for driven game.
I run the Zeiss 1.5 -6 x 42’s on my 308, 30/06 and 9.3x62 barrels. They are bullet proof. I also have Aimpoints for all of those barrels.
Good luck in choosing your scope.

Re: Newbie scope question
I just bought the Leica Amplus in 2.5-15x50i with tactical turret for a stalking/mid long range Sambar hunting for a project I've been working on. Picked this scope because it’s light and simple to operate and zero stop is very easy to set up for a euro scope.

Measure it, when it’s on the deck

If you're looking at long range then steer clear of the rail mounts. You cannot mount a bubble....

Re: Newbie scope question
You will get lots of opinions... I mostly use a Z8i 1-8x for driven hunts (moose in my case). It's almost always set on 1-2x for stuff that is running but the 8x is handy when something is standing in the trees or mooching along at a bit of a distance. That said. I have a 3.5-28x Z8i on one of my rifles and I happily use that on driven hunts as well. Set on 3.5x. Some parts of our hunting grounds have long open fields and sometimes you can get a chance at a long shot. Mostly stuff is under 100m so 1-2x does the job fine.
I've dropped/fallen/bang up my Swaros and not had problems. Stuff happens but in 20 years I've not ruined one yet. For me, you can't overstate the value of clear optics when trying to hit an animal running in timber!

I have the Swarovski Z8i 1.7-13.3x42 and it's a fantastic scope. Can shoot rattlesnakes up close in Texas and dialed it for a 341 yard kill with the BTF turret. I feel like it's a perfect all around scope
