Spare parts for Safari
Inquiring about opinions if I need to take any spare parts for my R8 in 30-06 on an upcoming safari. I have room in my gun case and thought I might bring an extra bolt housing, bolt head assembly, trigger group and magazine insert. I have these so I am not buying as spares. Shooting hundreds of rounds have never had a failure, so from that perspective, no need for spare parts. Have never lost a trigger group hunting, but Murphy can always happen. I typically carry a bare bones tool kit. I am also taking an extra scope with mount.

For my overseas hunts I always take these spares and tools. Complete bolt, magazine/trigger housing with magazine insert. Scope plus Aimpoint and iron sights, all zeroed of course. And all necessary allen keys etc. plus spare battery for the Aimpoint. And 60 rounds, which is usually about 58 more than I need.
Never had to use any of the spares….touch wood.

Same with me. Magazines, bolt heads, even carriers. Never used them, but I will take them again. Sometimes a barrel and scope. My worst nightmares are around missing an animal due to failure and/or having to borrow a gun!

Re: Spare parts for Safari
I just got back from Africa and had an awesome trip, I too had the same question when I was getting ready, three of us carried R93’s and I carried two complete guns (one .416& one 300win) that way we had “spare” parts in case of any failures.. when I was packing I put an extra mag in my gun case but later removed it thinking we won’t ever need that”.. Well,, one of my buddies told me after he shot his Buffalo the second round “popped up” and the mag didn’t catch it.
Upon investigation the ears that hold the case down had worn just enuff that they weren’t holding the shell casing in good and allowing it to pop up (first time I’ve ever seen this, and it looks like it’s just from normal wear) Changed the mag out with one of our extras from another gun and he was good to go again… So for me, YES, take the extra parts and pieces cause you never know.

Take a screwdriver kit with extra bits, especially Torx bits. Grind a bit to fit the mount adjusting screw. I take a spare scope. Also lens wipes and cleaning equipment. I took a breakdown rod. I take a pack of disposable washcloths , as washcloths weren't provided on any of my 3 trips. You can buy them online. Sunblock and long sleeved shirts are recommended. Also a wide brimmed hat. I have a Tilley that the outfitters always want to buy. It is washable and has a stiff brim. Take a small bottle of body wash. I also took a bag of lifesavers as I like a mint after meals.

Every time I go to Africa I reduce what I take, but it also depends on where you are going to be. I'm down to a bolt head, housing, scope/mount, magazine insert and screwdriver now. If I have more than one caliber I may or not spare for each - especially if there's overlap (not when one of them is the Hornet!)

Every tine I go away hunting for more then a day, I take a second scope and mount that's zeroed.
That's the most important thing, I've never had anything else fail.
Take anything else you can squeeze in, but definitely take that.

I'm soft and I don't care.
