Oh bother!

Post by Corjack »

I would like to quote one of my great heros, and call this little true story "Oh bother!"

Oh Bother!

When I got up this morning I knew that I would be stopping at a little truck stop in the afternoon. This particular truck stop is owned by an Indian family, and they are always so polite and friendly I always look forward to stopping there. Low and behold Mr. Skeetshot calls me about the time I was getting around. I asked him to teach me an Indian greeting so I could surprise these nice folks when I stopped in, and he did. When I got to the counter of the truck stop, I gave the fellow behind the counter the Indian greeting that I had practised all morning. The lad looked a little confused and said he could not understand me, I told him it was an Indian greeting, he laughed and said, he was actually a mexican, and he just worked for the Indian folks that owned the store, I then started speaking the little spanish that I had been working on, and again he looked confused, he then told me he was actually Honduran, and they did not use the same dialect as the Mexicans did, and he did not understand me. I the proceeded to fuel up the truck, and when I got back to the counter, the young lad had one of the Indians there with him, he told me to try my greeting on him, I did, but again I got this look of confusion. He told me he thought that was Hindi, and they actually were from the south part of India, and they spoke Punjabi. I said, you mean to tell me that my friend Skeetshot is like from Michigan, and you are from the equivilant of Mississippi? He thought that was very funny, but said it was more like Wisconsin and Alabama. So now we all know the real truth about Skeetshot, he is a cheesehead and roots for the Packers during football season. Upon further discussian I was informed that there were several different langages spoken In India.

I hate to be considered just another one of those snobby Americans, and I feel that when in Rome, a guy ought to at least make an attempt at learning a little Latin. But what a mess, now besides German, Danish, Swedish, Russian, Spanish and what I thought was Indian, I now have to add Honduran, and Punjabi to my list of langages to work on. Of course, I still do not understand what the hell the Aussies are saying half of the time

Welp, least you had an interesting morning! So many dialects, so little time, but I also try and learn to say a couple phrases when in different countries. Next up I'm going to have to learn Wisconsin!

I worked for a while as a forester in SW Tassie back in the early 80's and that remains one of the happiest periods of my life. I didn't grow up there ( so the locals though I was a bit wierd) but it is one hell of a nice place.

No, ANU, we always made fun of the Creswick boys.......

I grew up in Gods-country aka the NSW mid-north coast - but I liked Tassie just the same. They might not know much down there but damn, they know how to grow trees and trout!

 I wouldn't be able to find it but yeah, it would be south of where I'm from. I grew up in the Coff's area but that would put you where, Kempsey or Taree?

The usual way, by chance and misadventure..... It is a very nice part of the world though, especially up in the mtns and the northern corner, you get a sense of big sky country up there.
