300 Weatherby

Post by Snowwolfe »

Thinking of buying a barrel for my R8 in this caliber and making it part of my 2 part Alaskan rifle (other being 375 H&H). Anyone have any reloading experience with the 300 Wby for the R8? Would appreciate your input if you do.

For Alaska and elsewhere I use my 9.3x74R and my 300 Weatherby Mag barrels. My primary load is a180 Nosler Partition over a max charge of IMR 7828. I also use the Barnes 178 LRX again over a max charge of IMR 7828. This is in a K95 not an R8.
IMR 7828 is my go to powder for the 300 I get the best velocity and accuracy with it. Blaser uses a 1-11” twist and I have not had any luck with heavier bullets and those two bullets have killed a bunch of stuff for me.

Thanks. I might have a lifetime supply of 180 grain partitions and plenty of IMR 7828 on hand. I made a lucky purchase about 20 years ago when Nosler was selling "seconds" for $10.95 per 50 and purchased a few thousand.

I've never owned a 300 Weatherby. But a 30/06 or any of the 300 magnum's loaded with 180 Partitions is going to work well. IMO, which is worth fornicate all...I'd get a 300 Win Mag barrel instead of the Weatherby.

Good luck.....

Did I read that right - you shoot a 300 weatherby mag on a K95 frame? I think I would need practice a bit to do that...

I bought it used 6-7 years ago and it came threaded with a big ugly muzzle break. I switched that out for a Vias break and it is not bad to shoot at all. I have shot a lot of stuff with it all over the world. 300 yards is a long shot for me and just short of the don’t shoot get closer line but I really like how it puts a lot of energy on target.

I have an unbraked 300 weatherby barrel for my K95. It is lively, but shoots extremely well. It might be the tight grip …

Actually did order the 300 Wby barrel back on Sept 11 from Eurooptics. Maybe one of these days I will receive it :)

Like MM, i use 7828SSC in all of my weatherby calibers, except the 6.5-300. I get top velocities and great accuracy. It is a but hard to find these days, but worth the hunt.

Guess I got lucky. A few years ago ordered three rifles direct from Weatherby. A 6.5-.300, .300 Weatherby, and a .340 Weatherby, all left handed. Someone told me a good powder to try in all 3 was 7828. Made a few calls and do remember had to make a long drive and pay about $400 for the jug but guess now it was worth it.

I did not have good early (easy?) results with IMR7828SSC in the 6.5-300. It is the only Weatherby where I didn't immediately dial in a good load. I probably could have worked it more, but I corresponded with some other 6.5-300 shooters about their results before I completely exhausted my 7828 supply. I did find the 6.5-300 to be "touchy", unlike the others.

If I could buy a 8# jug of 7828SSC right now I would grab it. I have less than a pound left. I'm going to play with it a bit in some heavy bullet loads in mid-size cases.
