.338 win mag 50cm barrel loads

Post by Gun Barrel Ecologist »

Decided I needed a 6th R93 barrel to experiment with.

Current local thinking is anything bigger than the 200g SST won’t open up in the light framed local deer, although the short barrel makes me think I might as well try 250g RN interlock as 67g of 2209 may be burned before the muzzle whereas 72g might just produce muzzle flash for very little increase in velocity.

Keen to hear thoughts, favourite loads etc
I’m a long way from Melbourne so the .338 is a rare duck and I’ve yet to see any factory ammo, nor are there half a dozen of them on every club hunt

I've load the 200gr SST in the 338 Sambar. I tried the 2209 as that's what I used in my old 338WM. But this barrel seems to like the 2208 way better. Now these 200gr SST are not a bad projectile at all and there kill rate its pretty much 100 % and like a light switch on them. I would recommend them over the 250gr RN interlocks any day.
Measure it, when it’s on the deck

Cheers mate, what powder charge did you settle on?

At present I’ve got a property that needs to be cleared of scrub cattle which is probably why the box of RNs at the only store with any .338 bullets in stock has piqued interest

I could only find the load for the 300gr SN RN woodies for the 338wm and that was 63gr AR2209 2447fps I also found the Trail Boss load using the 300gr SNRN as well that was 20gr with mag primer 1080fps. Bugged if I can find it now. The 338Sambar I'm loading 60gr 2208 for the 200gr SST and I'm getting 2838fps

Guessing (but not sure) that it will be the same as the 35 Sambar, which uses the 300WSM case.
