Legislation lunacy in Australia (AGAIN)
Hi all
In the wake of the terrible Bondi terrorist attack which I won't rant about here, it appears that Australian gun ownership is sliding once again down the slippery slop of communism. The terrorist used some straight pull shotguns and the ugly Beretta BRX. This incident was entirely foreseeable with the weak Federal and State governments failing to pull up support for mass immigration and religious extremist activities against Jews.
All governments across Australia are being pressured by the weak Federal government to implement sweeping gun reform, because we know that fixes everything, and this is expected to be implemented blindly without rhythm or rhyme, no care, no information (relative), no thought and no consultation with firearms associations etc.. Immediately the New South Wales government folded and has rushed through legislation capping owners to four firearms and banning straight pull bolt actions. Queensland (my state) has yet to decide to do anything however are receiving maximum pressure from the Federal government and described nationally as 'the weak link'.
Queenslanders, you need to support the Premier even if you don't like him as he is so far fighting our battle.
My Blasers are a R8 Success with four barrels, a R93 Professional and a Makura Ulrich Takedown R93, six Blaser saddle mounts and three Blaser attaché cases. So far there has been no information about remuneration but I can say that with Aud$35,000+ on the line I am concerned that I will receive a nominal token refund of likely less than $3000 if the Western Australia 'Buy Back' is indicative of what the government sees as 'Fair Exchange'.
I would like to know if there are other Aussie Blaser owners out there and what are their thoughts. I am not trying to provoke trouble but I am concerned. Please respectfully write to your politicians voicing your concerns, please don't be silent that will NOT work.
Regards
John

Re: Legislation lunacy in Australia (AGAIN)
Hi John,
I have already written to all 92,Queensland members of parliament. Only four have replied.
Hopefully some states will not cave to federal pressure and not ban Blaser R8’s.
But you are right we need to keep fighting.

Written 182 letters to all Victorian MPs. Also donated to the 2 legal funds being setup to challenge in high court. Will be donating to 3rd in Victoria once I find their link.

Yes, I have donated as well . We all need to contribute something, even if it’s only small.

Yeah I’ve done the usual emails, donated to Shooters Union and hammered social media, especially the ‘media sites’ . The email responses from the Premier and Police Minister are fairly positive and I’m hoping there are no backflips.
No reply from PM, AG and state member (Labor) and a bull manure reply from my federal member Anika Wells.
Anyway, the fight is ongoing.

Hi guys
I to have written letters, donated, renewed my Shooters Union and SSAA, and at this point it's money where your mouth is I am guessing. Queensland seems to be holding out (I do most of my hunting in NSW, not helpful).
A bit of a wait and see I guess.
Cheers

Re: Legislation lunacy in Australia (AGAIN)
My thoughts are if this fails and we actually get some kind of reasonable remuneration I will buy a few K95 barrels for the Luxus or buy into a Sauer 505 with a few barrels.
that's a big IF though.
Cheers

I've been thinking the same about the 505. There are a few M03 kicking around with some accessories on Egun.de that could make it worthwhile.

I reckon that every man and his dog will have that in mind. I predict a massive increase in price and year long delivery waiting times.
I’m waiting to see the complete details of the new NSW fuckip.
WA allows R8’s and the NSW legislation is apparently based on WA.
In Queensland our R8’s are registered as bolt action rifles.
Wait to see what happens. The fight is not over yet.

I would not go assuming that R8’s will be banned in every state.
The thing that I find frustrating is that because of the R8’s design, you cannot fit a large capacity magazine, you can with other straight pulls. But the standard R8 can never be modified to fit more than between 2 and 5 rounds, depending on the cartridge. The placement of the trigger housing completely prevents this. So even if it is a straight pull slightly quicker than a bolt action, it is still limited by its small magazine capacity, and always will.
The Ultimate X is of course excluded from the above statement.

I am no fortune teller, but I have a gut feeling that these new laws are not going to be rolled out in every state. I think we will see watered down versions in most states. Too many elections coming up, and too many voters at stake.

Re: Legislation lunacy in Australia (AGAIN)
There is another thing that is running through my mind..
I am no engineer, nowhere near one.
But these laws are going to take time, and maybe Australia will not be the only country to go down this path.
But is it worthwhile raising this issue with Blaser?
Can a new R8 bolt be engineered that requires very marginal uplift?
Maybe Blaser would be interested doing in this, to future proof the R8 and potentially the next design, from future rollout of these straight pull laws in other countries?
Am I mad?

9.3x64 - Of course you are mad
I had exactly the same thought, instead of the up stroke being to unlock the bolt it was a marginal turn up at the end of the run out.
Now I certainly am not an engineer either but if we both thought of it others must be thinking similarly.
What are Australian sales to Blaser? Rifles, barrels and accessories? Sure they still have a few token K95 and combinations out there but they are few and far between, mostly owned by R8 and R93 shooters in the brand ecosystem. For Blaser Group, Mauser and Sauer sales are eclipsed by Tikka and Sako by a huge margin. Sako has released the Sako 100 switch barrel (a bit ugly and fat) but none the less an option in Sauer's backyard, neither offering a 22-250 option unfortunately.
I looked at a Sauer 505 today and it was okay, a long way of my R8 Success and the barrels are more expensive, have less calibre options etc..
I will be in wait and see mode for a while as I think we will be able to keep our R8/R93 rifles in Queensland, sticking to my K95 Luxus and M12 Expert for New South Wales hunting.
Keep up the fight.

I too think the price of the 505 will blow out and you are spot on with the wait times.
I am more interested in whether Victoria bans straight pull rifles and how this will affect transit with NSW between us. I have a mate just over the Vic/NSW border but air travel through Sydney and Albury airports will likely be an issue.
Cheers

Yeah John, traveling internationally and interstate may become a bit more difficult. And I guess if Vic does go down the NSW road then you won’t have to worry about transiting NSW. Which just goes to show that if you look hard enough you’ll find silver in every dark cloud![]()

Anyway, hopefully Queensland has dodged the bullet this time. And if we haven’t then I’ll cross the bridges as I get to them.
As to the idea of barstardising the R8 by altering the action....nah, not for me.
