A thanksgiving shoot
Way back, I think it was November 1979, I had gone to spend an afternoon in the woods near Corning, upstate New York, pursuing a sport I enjoyed tremendously, hunting Grey squirrels with a 22 and a small squirrel caller.
The technique was to move around slowly in the hard wood forest, sitting down every few hundred yards, waiting about 20 mins for the woods to settle down and then squeezing the rubber bulb of the squirrel call several times and watching. If one was well concealed, even a squirrel that had seen me coming in, would get curious and expose himself for a shot.
Well, that afternoon, once I settled down and started calling I was startled by a whooshing sort of noise. I turned slowly and there standing on the ground was a long bearded Jake turkey. The 4 x fixed Weaver mounted on my Remington 541 S quickly settled on that chalk blue head and the woods were hardly disturbed by its sharp crack.
The next thing I saw was another Tom gobbler run up to its fallen comrade and started kicking him and trying to fight him.
I quickly recycled the bolt, but he ran off on hearing the noise or seeing my movement. A few seconds later, three hens came walking in a line looking solemnly at the fallen Jake.
I had the cross hairs on one but did not fire, because the next moment that other Tom came running back and sort of shooed the hens away.
I waited a while after that but nothing returned.
For me, an interesting and memorable Thanksgiving afternoon.
And to all the American members of BlaserBuds, a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families

Re: Gobble;Gobble;Gobble
I went out yesterday afternoon, and cut brush piled it and burned the pile. It was very good excercise. Our dinner will be late today, so I may go out this morning and do the clearing thing again. Happy thanksgiving to all!
