9.3x62 Pet Loads

Post by retrieverman »

Though my loads have performed flawlessly on game and shoot extremely well at the range, I am interested in finding out what 9.3x62 loads others are shooting.

My current load is 250 gr Nosler Accubond, 55 grs Varget, CCI 250 primer in Lapua brass.Image

I just got back from testing another load for my 9.3x62, and from my results at 50 yards, I think I have another winner.

This load consists of a 285 gr PRVI bullet over 59 grs Varget, CCI 250 primer in Lapua brass.

At 50 yards, it shoots into the same hole as the 250 gr Accubond load.Image

I found some cheap soft point 232 gr 9.3 bullets that I forgot that I had, and I loaded up a few to test tomorrow.

I had tried these bullets a year of so ago when Corjack and I both bought them and didn't get very good results, but I loaded them with Varget like I do all my 9.3 loads. I did a little research today and discovered IMR 3031 or N322 is a better powder for that bullet weight. Since I have 3031 on hand, that is what I am using.

This time I loaded 56.5 grs IMR 3031, CCI 250 primer in Norma brass, and I am anxious to see how this load prints. :? IF it shoots like I hope it does, these will be my "varmint" load. ;)

I have never loaded for the 9,3x62 but I have loaded for my 9,3x74R quite a bit.
And I have taken a lot of game from skunks to cape buff, with most everything in between.
I have used several different bullets.

My 2 favorite Soft Points, suitable for ALL game where a soft is proper, are the 286 gr Woodleigh SP or the 286 Nosler Partition. These 2 bullets can do it all.

For elephants and giraffe the 286 Woodleigh Solid works perfect.

However for deer and wild pigs the Speer 270 SP has performed perfectly for me.

If I had a 9,3x62 Bolt Rifle I might look into a bullet of around 250 gr for long range shooting of deer sized game... But if you study the ballistics it would be hard to beat the 286gr Nolser Partition as the, one and only, all round bullet for a 9,3x62.

IMHO the 9,3x62 and the 9,3x74R are 2 of the best hunting rifle calibres on the planet.

I already have a great and proven "deer" load using a 250 gr Accubond, and I am planning to try the 285 gr PRVI round nose soft point on a doe tomorrow if one offers herself as a sacrifice. For Texas and Oklahoma size deer and hogs, the 232 gr round nose soft point should be more than adequate, and for what I paid for these "no name" bullets, they make shooting a 9.3 really cheap.Image

I have been meaning to reload mine for a while now but it's just easier and cheaper ATM to use Highland factory ammo.

But I might give the 250gn Nosler a go next year or if I can find some other 220gn or so sized pill for Deer.
I'm soft and I don't care.

With my 9,3x74R double I have shot a few deer and pigs with the Norma factory 232 Vulcan with again perfect results..

Actually I feel the 232 Vulcan is a tougher bullet than the 286 gr Alaska.??? I have shot several animals with both...

In 9,3x62, I load the Lapua Mega 286 on top of N 135 / 48.5. Before, I loaded 52.0 gn but Vihtavuori reduced its max to 48.5 without explaining ?!?! While not convinced (I never noticed overpressure signs), I followed suit for safety's sake. Both loads are very accurate and kill well though.

In 9,3x74R, I load H4831 / 68.0 behind the Norma 286 Plastic Point. A (much) compressed load that rolls wild boars like rabbits and which both bbls. of my double rifle shoot into the same hole.

From my initial testing. the 232 gr round nose soft point bullets appear to be quite accurate, but I want to try them off a bench instead of off the handlebars of my 4 wheeler. The 250 gr Accubonds and 285 gr PRVI bullets print 1" high at 50 yards, and the 232 gr bullets consistently print about 3 inches high at 50 yards using a scope. When I shot both loads at 25 yards with open sights, the 250 and 285 gr bullets printed about an inch low and an inch left, and the 232 gr bullets printed dead on. I used once fired Norma brass for the initial 232 gr loads, but I am going to load up some more using virgin Lapua brass.

I will try again tomorrow. ;)

I am currently loading 55.6 grains AR2208 (ie., Varget?) over 286 Gr TSX FB. and getting .68 MOA at 100 mtrs. on a 20+ km/h blustery day with a 22.72" barrel.

I arrived at this load after some pointers from Deerhunter and then running an Optimum Charge Weight Development where the 55.6 gr. load was hitting the same point as each of the two loads above and below it, respectively, (see OCW technique at http://optimalchargeweight.embarqspace.com/)

We can get those here, but they are so pricey, I have not cared to experiment with them.
There are no fleas on the 9.3s

They are about double the price of anything else here (if i can get them), but i was just curious because of the high ballistic coefficient and low weight. I love lapua, i hate the price!
