Was speaking to Retrieverman today, his little girl had come down sick at school and he had to go get her. Got me to thinking about how the times have changed from when I was a kid. When I was a child and complained that I was to sick to go to school, mom and dad would promptly get out the caster oil and force you to swallow a big spoonfull of the vile stuff. Then dad would mix up a concoction of honey, lemon, crushed garlic and scotch and make you drink a big glass of the stuff about every two hours along with another shot of caster oil.Mom then would make you eat a big spoonfull of Vicks, some how this just did not seem right as the Vicks would just coat the inside of your mouth and throat and it would take several days to get the greasy stuff cleared from the inside of your mouth. When I was about 14 years old I read the directions on the Vicks container and discovered you were suposed to just RUB THE manure ON YOURSELF! When I confronted mom about this, she only laughed at me and a week later forced a big wad of it down the throat of one of my younger siblings. Usually being sick only lasted one day, you would get up the next morning running a fever of 105, vomiting and poop running down both legs and declare yourself fit to go to school. One time when I was sick I asked to go to my grandparents home just down the road to avoid all the vile treatment, BIG MISTAKE, grandpa promptly ran to town and got a fifth of scotch, grandma was out of garlic so she substuted onion and add a small red pepper that came off a plant that one of her students from India had given her, crushed it all up added the honey, lemon juice and just a wee bit of scotch, it was still rather thick, but they made me drink a big slug of it, then forced a big wad of Vicks down my throat, the Vicks coating did seem to help sooth the pain and burning caused by the extremely hot little red pepper added to the mix, then grandpa rubbed me down with this black tar like stuff that smelled horrible, said it was something his grandmother had invented, the jug it came in was so old I figured his grandmother had probably mixed this batch up as well. Then I got put to bed, the nasty stuff on my body stuck to the sheets so badly you just could not get comfortable and the noise from grandma and grampa yelling and arguing with each other would not let me sleep and it got even worse after they finished off the fifth of scotch and grandma told grandpa how stupid he was for not getting two bottles, after all they had a sick child to care for. I got up early the next morning, snuck out and walked three miles to where I could catch the bus and went to school. Sure I got laughed at a lot as the black tar crap could be smelled from several yards away, lucky for me it was friday and I had the whole weekend to recover from the CURE as grandpa liked to call it.
My parents had five children and when we graduated school we where always in the top 5% of attendance, one sister never missed a day, even went to school on monday after falling off a horse and breaking her arm on sunday. Who would of thought that eating Vicks could make a broken bone knit so fast?

Re: Getting Sick
Now that is interesting Corjack
I see you remember rather explicitly your 'sick' days.
It was very similar to that in our household, but without the eating of Vicks and Tar rubdown! Didn't miss much school either, Waidmannsheil, Dom.

Re: Getting Sick
I suspect the 'thought' of eating Vicks would make you well real quick. That's gross!
BTW where did you grow up anyway?
