9mm bullet weights

Post by Corjack »

Most 9mm ammo sold in the US is the 115 grain variety. The nato round is 123 grains. There is also 147 grain. The 9mm has a reputation as a poor stopper. Would not use of a 147 grain hollow point such as a Hornady XTP or Speer gold dot help correct this? My P7s both shoot better with 147 grain ammo than 115s. Have never tried the 123/125 grain bullets. I can not help but think the hevier bullet would be better.

What do you guys think?

The Federal 115 +P at one time had the best reputation as a "stopper" in 9mm...

The 147 gr has a dismal record.
I have shot people with it... I was required to carry it.

If now, I had to carry a 9mm. and could choose my ammo, I would carry a 115 or a 124 +P expanding bullet... And be prepared to shoot multiple rounds and, shoot a few for the head...

A MUCH BETTER choice IMHO is to carry a 1911 Light Weight Commander in 45 ACP.

The 115 Federals shoot great from my SIG 239 9mm but I don't shoot people and pray I never will. ;)

But I always have this big all blued Ruger Redhawk with a 7.5 barrel that sure does look real scary. And with 240 gr bullets makes big holes in things, including squirrels....it's always in the car.
