Snakes
I am very prejuduce when it come to snakes, I realize that most snakes are harmless and benificial, eating small roidents and other vermin, however snakes just give me the heeby jeebies, makes whatever hair I have left stand on end and so on. I usually kill copperheads when I see them and rattlesnakes in my area are scarce. I try to leave blacksnakes and kingsnakes alone, unless they try and come in the house. When I was very young I recall my mother rushing from the bathroom bucknaked, run outside, return with an axe and chop a blacksnake into many pieces all while shreaking like a crazy woman. I have been scarred for life, no wonder I aint right!

Re: Snakes
The only good snake is a dead snake in my opinion. I am acutely aware every time I go into the woods with Annie that the snakes are out in east Texas, and I have a genuine fear of her getting bit especially after my Dad's brittany did a few years ago. We have both copperheads and cottonmouth mocs in large populations, and we occasionally encounter a rattler or a coral snake. Since much of our place is in bottom land, mocs pose the greatest risk, but I actually killed a baby copperhead this afternoon while walking out from checking my game camera and looking for hogs.
Here are a couple of photos of my Dad's dog after he was snake bit.

Re: Snakes
I'm sort of in two minds when I comes to snakes. I don't mind 'em as beasities (but don't get me going on spiders...) but I've been knocked silly after being thrown by horses who did not like snakes and a couple of years ago we near lost our young GWP when she was bitten on the nose. So I tend toward the kill 'em on sight option myself. Luckily I now live up north and they are fairly uncomon, except in early spring when they are dopey after a long winter. The pup just lucked out on finding a recently emerged very large and poinsonous one. I carried her about 2km to the car and then we rushed her to the vet and she was fine - but very sick.

Re: Snakes
We have 10 of the most verminous snakes out here we are just so lucky. Only good snake is a dead snake any where around dogs you must always be on the look out for them
Measure it, when it’s on the deck

Re: Snakes
yeah our snakes are all out to kill you or your dog.... best bet in AU is to keep the fornicate away from them. Help is a long way away when you are in the bush
Shoot First, measure them later.

Re: Snakes
I've actually let a few non poisonous snakes live the last few years but normally a good snake is a dead one. We have lots of diamondback rattlers, some corals, a few copperheads and cotton mouth moccasins. I killed two rattlers here at the house last fall and one in my mother's front yard. Don’t like snakes or spiders for that matter. We have brown recluses here and they are some bad little buggers. Friend of mine got bit in the back a few years ago. It was nasty and took a long time to get over. My motto normally is if it moves it dies.
