New season, new still.

With spring here I can start brewing again, so I bought a new turbo boiler and a pot still condenser to try out.
Unlike a full tower reflux still this should leave plenty of flavour and it won't run at the same ABV but that's what leaves more flavour in.
If it works to a similar flavour profile as my double thumper does then I might convert the 58lt boiler lid to take the new head and simplify my system.
My old one is absolutely brilliant but takes a lot of space, cleaning and maintenance to run and is a little messier.

The other reason to get one of these is it has a standard head size that I can some other heads for to try out.
That's should make for a lot of different things to try.

I just ran the 1st batch, much less mucking around and mess with this system.
It also produces 1lt more spirit then my 20lt system does for the same ABV.
Not bad for a 1st run, I can tweak it from here, I know my temp readings now and if I pack a bit more coper mesh into it I think I can get a higher alcohol content.
My big double thumper puts out at 80% with this wash, this only started at a bit over 70% but there was less variation until the last litre.
The flavour is a little better in my big rig but for an extra 2 litres with equal volumes run (my double thumper is 58lt, this is only 25lt) I think this rig is a keeper.
The flavour is 90% the output is 130% and the mess and space it takes up is 50%
Im pretty happy with this system so I might convert the 58lt boiler to run on the same arm.
A variable power controller will probably let me make it even more efficient with a higher output, I think with some tweaking I could get a full 4lt a run out of it.

Just got another batch on, 20lt of rum and 40lt bourbon.
That will top up my winter stash, then I can start building up again.

I've also set up my 58lt still so when I get back from overseas I can put the new head on it and start pumping out in bulk again.

She's a little tied up ATM.
Also thinking that I might buy a reflux head and a botanical basket so I can try my hand at gin.
Maybe some vodka too, but that's kind of simple to make.
Although I do like a vanilla vodka, but then I can make that with my current set up and a few runs.
But it is nice to have all the gear.

I plan on adding one of these to monitor the strength of the output in real time, and because it just looks cool.

And one of these is on the cards just in case I want to make some vodka or gin, and because I can.

Well I jumped in and made three big changes and a small one.
1st change was to remove the coper packing from the head, that will make it flow more easily and not remove much flavour.
2nd was to replace the steel flat lid with a copper Alembic dome lid, that provides more copper to replace the packing and the shape actually helps enhance the flavour.
3rd I added a digital power regulator so I can control the heat.
Lastly I braised on an extension to the rather short coper spout.

The good thing about this new boiler is it takes the same lid as my old one, so I an run it like this, as a conventional pot still with thumper or as a reflux still.
It makes it as versatile as a Blaser.

The power controller is awesome, it let's me control the temperature without loosing any flavour, the new Alembic lid is definitely making for more flavour and it's a smooth sweet bourbon too.
It's going to be my best run yet.
