222 rem K95 loads

Post by Blasernovice »

I’ve just ordered a .222 Remington barrel for my K95, has anyone used the Sierra 63gr smp projectile in theirs? I intend to use it on deer here in New Zealand.
I see in other rifles with a 1:14 twist the stability varies from rifle to rifle.
I do have some Sierra 55gr if 63gr won’t work.

I can’t help with the info you are after Stu, but look forward to hearing how you get on with this.

I have not tried the Sierra 63gr. smp, I just assumed they would be to heavy to stabilize. I wanted a "deer" load for my 222 k95 and BD14 so I went with the Barnes 45grn TSX bullet. I have not shot a deer with it yet but squirrels, chipmunks, fox, coyote, raccoon all died quite well. I also shoot Lapua factory soft points that I have heard are tougher than most US bullets but no proof of that. Both my barrels were not the easiest to find a load for but when I found it they are great shooters. I hope this helps.

Hi Stu,
I am currently playing, with my new K95 5.6x50R barrel, and with the 63gr Serria SMP, looks very good, about to go down to shed and load 30-40 rounds, as well as sum 52gr hollow points to try.
The 5.6 is 1-12 twist, i think the .222 is 1-14 twist,
my old sako .222 1-14 would shot them into a 1.5" group at 100m, Not as good as normal but enough for deer, i also tried the 70 gr Speer, about 2" if i remember correctly, but it didn't much matter back in the late 80's was mostly bush hunting the North Island and shots were close.
I think you will be on the edge of stability, so they may not work for you with a .222,
How much did a spare barrel burn you,
