My great grandmother used to tell me stories

The world was once all covered with water. Thunder bird asked grandfather bear to swim down and get some mud off of the ocean floor. He did and thunder bird formed it into an island. The people later came out of a hole in the ground.

Their was once a time when the people did not properly prepare the dead, and the ghost of the dead roamed the earth freely, after a time, there became so many of them, that they were causing problems. Many colored crow, went into an open area in the middle of the forest and began to pile up dry brittle twigs, the ghost then started to gather round and watch what he was doing. After a while the ghost of a warrior slain in battle asked him what he was doing, many colored crow ignored him and continued to pile up dry twigs. When all the ghost had gathered round out of curiousity. He quickly struck fire to the now large pile of twigs. All the ghost were then consumed by the fire, but in the process many colored crow singed his feathers black. That is why crows are black to this day. Many colored crow then instructed the people how to properly prepare the dead, so that their ghost would not roam the earth.

Black Wolf and Many colored crow are brothers, they do not get along, and constantly bicker, fight and play tricks on each other. This fighting causes many problems for the people, but it keeps the world balanced. When Black wolf and many colored crow stop fighting, the world will end.

I do not remember witch Indians she spoke of, but it seems it was the Pawnee. They believe that every man is the center of their own universe, the world begins the day you are born, and will end the day you die.

Very interesting :)

In fact, considering the rich heritage of the Red Indians in the US,there must be a lot of such stories and folklore available.

And in spite the advent of "modern" technology, there would be a lot of simple truths and guiding principles in such stories.

Thanks Corjack

Interesting story. I would say that YOUR personal universe fits that idea though. When it ends, it ends...

Another Indian story -- The two wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said: 'My son, the battle is between 'two wolves' inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.'

The grandson thought about it for a minute, and then asked his grandfather: 'Which wolf wins?'

The old Cherokee simply replied: 'The one you feed.'
