Scope for Blaser R8 22LR

Post by marauder »

Hello,

I’m trying to choose a scope for a 22 LR barrel on a Blaser R8. The centerfire barrels will wear Swarovski Z8i with BTF elevation turrets.

Key things for me are something that is fairly lightweight, able to have correct parallax and focus at close distances (50m or less), and some way of compensating for bullet drop (whether that be ballistic turrets or a reticle).

Open to first or second focal plane, but don’t want a 1FP with high magnification as then the reticles are too thin at lower magnifications. Magnification of 9x to 15x on the top end should be plenty.

Budget is flexible. Happy to hear suggestions regardless of price.

On the shortlist I have:

Meopta Optika5 2.5-10x42 Rimfire ZPlus (25mm tube, 2FP, ballistic reticle, capped turrets, min parallax 10m, weight 590g)

ZEISS Conquest V4 4-16x44 with ASV (30mm tube, 2FP, various reticle options, ASV ballistic turret option, min parallax 10m, weight 640g)

Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44 P BT (25mm tube, 2FP, duplex reticle with ballistic turrets, min parallax 50m, weight 450g)

Nightforce SHV 4-14x50 F1(30mm tube, 1FP, MRAD reticle and exposed ballistic turrets, min parallax 25m, weight 850g)

What are your recommendations?

Go the Swaro, 30mm tubes are a bit big and bulky for such a slim barrel and it's go tons more magnification then anyone would need on a hunting 22lr.
I'm soft and I don't care.

I've recently gone through this process....well come to think about it...still going through it.

I've come to the conclusion that I need 3 scopes/sights  I'm currently using a 2-7 Kahles on my .22, which I'll continue to use for hunting and I figure that an Aimpoint micro will also be great for practice and some hunting. For target work I had made up my mind on a Nightforce SHV 4-14x50 F1. But they are bloody heavy and I doubt that I'll actually do much shooting past 100 yards so ....maybe the ZEISS Conquest V4 4-16x44 with ASV could be what I get. I've looked through one and liked what I saw. It's also a bulky scope but not as bulky as the SHV and it's half the price. I reckon it would be more than adequate for my target shooting...so long as I don't try the Lone Range stuff out to 300 meters.

But, I must say that I am intrigued with this Meopta Optika5 2.5-10x42 Rimfire ZPlus. I haven't seen one ...but I might have a look at one.

Good luck with your research.

So many people live the 2-7x36 Kahles, why they don't make them again makes no sense to me, they would sell like Covid-19 vaccinations.

Yeah I agree. One of the best hunting scopes ever made.

The Zeiss V4 would be my pick, though I am very curious about those Meopta Optika 5 Rimfire scopes.

I had a play with the Zeiss V4. Very nice but a bulky scope. I’m also going to try and get a look at the Optika 5 rimfire scope.

Yep agree, I bought mine many years ago and I don't understand why they don't re make them.

Looks like a good scope for walking them up.

I like fixed 6x42 scopes for most deer hunting situations as well.
I think we have all gotten a bit carried away with our scope selections over recent years, me included.

Been saying that for years, most of my shots are under 100m, and I've seen more people miss out on taking a shot because they couldn't get a, sight picture fast enough then lost game from not having enough magnification.
Varmints are a different story but for medium to large game smaller is definitely better then bigger.
Unless it's on a dedicated LR rifle.
